    Wallabies a laughing stock

    Wallabies a laughing stock

Did I say 19 points? Oh ho ho! What a chuckle. The only people laughing louder than me (and probably AT me too), are the Scottish fans who quite rightly will be dining out on this victory for quite some time to come.

There’s also a few deranged giggles coming from the Wallaby fan section, and the men in white coats must be on the cusp of an influx of new patients from that bunch. And that tittering you can hear coming from the south? The All Blacks and Springboks giggling at the hapless men in gold.

Predictions? What a thankless business. And as if anyone could predict anything this Wallaby side is going to do anyway. Just about every time you think they must have run out of ways to twist the knife into the chests of their loyal supporters, they conjure up a flabbergasting loss to the 9th ranked side in world rugby, who never looked like scoring against them.

The Wallabies are fast becoming a scoff-fest of their own making, and the stream of scoffable items just never stops coming. Matt Giteau’s nomination for IRB Player Of The Year? Pfffft. The Bumble Brothers Horwill and Chisolm in the second row? Yuk yuk. The Wallabies ability to convert pressure into points? Har de har har.

    ........................

Cross is miles from being a Test quality centre. Contrast his meek surrender in the tackle with an Ioane or a Mortlock in damage mode, and you get some inkling of the popgun attack that Robbie Deans is forced to play with when the injury toll mounts. Coupled with Cross’ scatty decision making, (remember his turnover offload after gathering a loose pass from Genia?) you can imagine that the Scots must have licked their lips when he appeared on the team sheet.

    .......................

As for the rest of the tour, brace yourselves Wallaby fans – this could get worse

Well there you go... we paid the ultimate price for underestimating Scotland!! What a defensive effort to the Scots good on them!!! Giteau was... well his face says it all at the end of the game, make sure there are no razors in his dressing room or he may try a cry for help. Q. Cooper was uninspiring and really should have done a lot more (why oh why a cut out pass when not needed). Cross may as well have been a crab for all of the sideways running! Burgess is a buffoon who shouldn’t be in the team how a 9 cannot pass is beyond me. Where the even any locks out on the field?

Adam Ashley-Cooper was again outstanding and easily the best player by a very long margin can we clone him?

Tough loss, i hope they take a lot out of that because they need to.

I find it amazing how it took them untill the 77th minute to realise Scotland weren't commiting anyone to the rucks and Pick and Go's were the best option. The other 10 times in the 22 they were just passing it out wide on the first 3 phases when they should of been sucking players into the ruck area. It is almost 2nd nature for all Super14 teams but they must think they have a better game plan now....

In the cold light of day, it probably should be remembered that while the Scots were awesome in defence and the Wallabies pretty ordinary in attack, they did get over the line three times, with at least one debatable.
There were also three kicks wasted, so really it wasn't the lack of attack, we were in the zone, it was a conversion issue.
This was a team that, on paper, the Wallabies should have put away, but the paper turned to mache` and they paid the price for not converting their opportunities.

the forward pass from cooper was a forward pass.
the 2 held up tries are unforgivable.
should take a page from guys like hore and woodcock and co when picking and driving towards the try line.

The buck should stop here: cease paying the Wallabies for losing

    Greg Growden | November 23, 2009

    MONDAY MAUL

The Wallabies are not just the laughing stock of Australian sport. They are also the laughing stock of the international rugby world after suffering their worst loss in decades. This defeat was not as bad as being beaten by Tonga in 1973 but it's not far off.

To think that just over a week ago this group of players seriously thought they were going to emulate the feats of the 1984 Wallabies by completing a grand slam. More like a grand sham after they allowed a second-rate rugby team, which had no imagination and did little more than tackle for 80 minutes, to beat them for the first time in 27 years and 17 encounters.

Depressing as it may be when the Wallabies get belted by New Zealand and South Africa, at least their opponents are usually formidable. When the Wallabies give up, as they did in Wellington, it is hard for the fans to cop.

But getting beaten by Scotland? That is unforgivable. The Scots have done nothing in the Six Nations for ages and are rightfully ranked a lowly ninth in the IRB world rankings. They are little more than a bunch of scrappers who haven't a clue about how to score a try against a good team.

In the end, it was probably for the better that Australia did not emulate the grand slam feats of the 1984 Wallabies, because this crop is vastly inferior to that mighty side. And to think that magical bunch did it all for nothing and this mob of perennial losers are among Australian football's highest-paid players?

It begs the question of whether the Australian Rugby Union, which has an annual player salary bill of $27 million, is getting value for money? Hardly. The Wallabies struggle to score tries. They struggle to kick goals. They struggle to win games. What do they do? Not much really - the bulk of these players have won absolutely nothing of note in their international careers.

Most disconcerting is that Australia's highest-paid player and chief playmaker, Matt Giteau, had the chance to establish himself as the king dog on Saturday. He fell way short of the mark. He failed to provide midfield leadership, he kicked abominably at goal and took poor options. His ability to handle pressure must be seriously questioned.

Don't forget this is the same side that demanded to be paid for a pre-tour intra-squad trial match; the same bunch who had their noses out of joint when this column recommended that their pay structure be changed, suggesting a bonus scheme that rewarded them for victories and docked their wages for losses.

And what else can coach Robbie Deans do? He's tried everything. He's given so many players so many chances and they continue to waste their opportunities. Not even Vince Lombardi could get this mob up.

Undoubtedly, the calls will be made for Deans to move on. But, seriously, who is out there to replace him? No one. As with the players, the Australian coaching cupboard is near bare. The problem is not with the head coach, it is with the players.

Their skill level is uninspiring. They cannot back up. They have a losing mentality. They are lazy. And deep down they know they can get away with unacceptable performances, because player depth is so poor.

Forget feeling sorry for the players. They get paid big money. The quicker the ARU brings in a win-loss salary system for the Wallabies the better. Then, and only then, will the magnitude of Saturday's loss at Murrayfield really hit home to the players

It seems that much of the blame for this performance has been laid at Giteau's feet.....Now I'm not one to say I told you so but.........

Look, dropping Gits will have a positive effect on this group regardless of whether he is the ACTUAL problem or not. He has been touted as the general, the playmaker, the highest paid footballer in the team, if he's dropped the others will take notice. Stick Matty Toomua or Quade cooper in the 10 jersey, throw rabbit into 12 and Ashley Cooper into 13, sure we'll get spanked by the Welsh through poor tackling technique but we'll gain a bonus when everybody realises that you'll be dropped for youth if you take your spot for granted.

On the bright side, I can't wait for the Force to take the field next year. It'll be very interesting to see if their mental issues are fixed with a nuggety, gritty halves pairing like Sheehan/Pretorius. I'm pretty sure those two won't meekly submit to a lesser team, more likely they'd both be binned for throwing punches.

Wallabies an embarrassment according to Greg Growden

The Wallabies are the embarrassment of the international rugby world, after their first loss to Scotland in 27 years. But Rugby Union correspondent Greg Growden says there is not the depth in Australian rugby for any obvious replacements before the next match.
