I actually quite like the SA national anthem it sounds better than ours does. An anthem that embraces a cultural and linguistic diversity is better than one that many Australians don't feel speaks to them culturally.

I'd prefer something like Waltzing Matilda. Mostly because everyone else's anthem is about god or the queen or saving the nation and Waltzing Matilda is about stealing sheep. Bit different. "We are Australian" is also good.

I think our anthem's fine personally - my theory is that the only reason it doesn't sound great is that Australians have a real problem with singing in public so it always comes out sounding half @rsed!

    South Africa accepts French apology

    November 18, 2009 - 7:09AM

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa's rugby boss has accepted an apology from his French counterpart over the poorly sung anthem at last week's Test match.

Oregan Hoskins, president of the South African Rugby Union, had demanded an explanation after a singer was accused of mangling the South African national anthem before the match in southern France last week. In a statement yesterday, Hoskins said Pierre Camou of the French Rugby Union offered unreserved apologies.

Hoskins says he accepts that French rugby officials did not deliberately try to "sabotage the anthem and, as much as the performance still rankles, we regard the matter as now closed." (In other words, we now realise that it was actually more of a South African bungle than a Fench one, so we have decided to stop going on about it like a mob of whinging dickheads, accept that we played crap and will try and keep some moral higher ground by being gracious with this apology without having to apologise for any allegations made in the heat of the moment by our players or officials...)

    France won the match 20-13.
