Mooney axed as Reds coach

Queensland Reds coach Phil Mooney has been sacked.

Incoming Queensland Rugby Union chairman Rod McCall has just announced in a media conference that his contract has been terminated immediately.

"Phil's shattered," McCall said. "It's obviously something very close to his heart. He's taken the news pretty hard."

Yup. Perhaps any new coaching appointee in Aus Rugby should get John Mitchell's lawyer/agent to oversee his contract.

even though i dont agree with the sacking, it actually makes sense

In 2011 there will be a new victorian team signing players, Mooneys contract ran at the end of next year and players are unwilling to commit to a team where there was uncertainty over the coaching position.

At least now the players will know who the coach is

This is bullshit - a very decent man and a pretty handy coach has been royally screwed today.

I heard on the grapevine that Wendell Sailor was coming in as a player-coach. And that Queensland Reds were going to be renamed Wendell's Warriors.
