The Brumbies celebrate their first home win of 2009 against the Crusaders

The Brumbies will play seven home matches at Canberra Stadium in 2010 following the release of the Investec Super 14 draw today.

The ACT-based side will host 2009 Investec Super 14 finalists, the Chiefs, and semi finalists, the Hurricanes, as well as an always anticipated Australian derby against the Queensland Reds on Saturday, 1 May. The Brumbies will open the home season against the Lions on Friday, 5 March, with the Sharks, Cheetahs and Highlanders also making their way to the national capital during the season.

The two-time Super Rugby champions will kick off their season in Perth when CA Brumbies recruits Matt Giteau and Josh Valentine take on their former province, the Western Force, on February 12. The Brumbies will then continue on to South Africa to play 2009 Champions, the Bulls in Pretoria and the Stormers in Cape Town.

On returning from ‘The Republic’, the Brumbies will play eight of their next nine matches in Australia, including seven home matches at Canberra Stadium and one against rivals, the Waratahs, at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on Saturday, 24 April.

The Brumbies have been provided with their bye over the Easter Weekend and will conclude the regular season against the Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday, 15 May.

“We’re very comfortable with what next year’s draw has in store for us,” Brumbies Head Coach Andy Friend said. “The South African leg is always a great challenge to a visiting side, so to have that in the early stages of the competition is beneficial.

“We’ll be hoping to get a few results in those first three weeks and return to seven of our next nine matches at home which can really set up our season. The players love playing at Canberra Stadium and to have an extra home match and an extra opportunity for us to play in front of our members and supporters is a tremendous boost to the side.

“The bye in the middle of the competition is also a great chance for players to recuperate before hopefully starting our run towards the finals.”

Brumbies Rugby CEO Andrew Fagan says an extra home match is just one additional benefit for Brumbies Members in 2010.

“With seven matches at Canberra Stadium and priority purchase for home finals tickets, 2010 certainly presents tremendous value for our members,” he said. “We’ve got seven outstanding matches against some of the competition’s top sides, including the Chiefs, Hurricanes and Sharks. The derby match against the Reds always draws significant interest and we’re all looking forward to the team’s first home match – featuring the return of Matt Giteau to Canberra Stadium – against the Lions on March 5.

“There’s already a lot of talk surrounding the squad we’ve assembled for 2010. We’re pleased to have them on show in front of the Canberra public on at least seven occasions and we’re hoping their performances will lead to an extra home game or two at Canberra Stadium through the finals.”
