Pretty sure Anti-Siphoning applies to things on a proscribed list- i.e. things people will kick up a stink about missing were they on HD only.

"In Australia anti-siphoning laws also affect free-to-air digital-only services, stopping certain programmes (eg AFL matches) from being shown exclusively on digital television, instead requiring them to simulcast the programme on analogue"

So until the Analogue signal is gone completly, this will probably still apply

At least until they switch the analogue signals off, end of 2013. But the transition starts 2010, so I suspect the argument will run that as of next year digital TV is FTA and satisfies the requirements (and encourages folk to change).

The whole anti-siphoning law is up for re-negotiation soon as well so we may see some changes (I hope)

Grumbles' article in the match day program put a much better spin on the Subi situation. Basically said we've always had a bit of drama with rugby in WA, since the 1880's when it was first played here, but we've always come through it.
Article is on page 56/57/58 of the program... http://www.rugby.com.au/qantas_walla...am,131119.html

There's also a good article (not by Grumbles) on page 46-48 on Dave Pocock & how he came to play rugby.

the anti siphoning laws are in regards to major sport events events, AFL & NRL matches, Olympics, Rugby Union tests and certain australian cricket matches.

Initialy the law was a blessing for sports fans, but its struggling to keep pace with the technological advances these days, the Australian Government is reacessing the list which will open the option up for broadcasting events like wallaby matches on the One HD, they hope it will encourage the take up of digital television.

Foxtel argue that the list should only apply to events which have a history of been broadcast live in there entirety, i tend to support that.

It was a blessing when first bought in, but now that Pay TV is alot more widespread then when the laws were first introduced and given the crap treatment that FTA TV gives some sport such as Rugby over here. One of them main problems is that FTA buys up and then either shows it on a massive delay (eg Rugby and Tennis here in Perth) or not at all
