    Springboks name Pienaar at fullback

Unbeaten South Africa have pulled out a selection surprise for Saturday night's Tri-Nations rugby Test against the Wallabies, naming Ruan Pienaar at fullback.

Pienaar, who made his name as a halfback before converting to five-eighth this year, replaces Frans Steyn in the No.15 jersey for the Subiaco Oval clash.

The mercurial Steyn drops to the bench where Schalk Burger has also been named for his comeback from suspension for gouging in the June series against the British and Irish Lions.

Burger comes back into the Springboks squad for Danie Rossouw, who is nursing a slight hamstring strain.

South Africa will be searching for a third Test win in Perth over the Wallabies following two wins, two losses and a draw in their five previous meetings.

A fourth straight Tri-Nations victory will almost guarantee the world champions the 2009 series crown.

The Wallabies, without a win at the halfway point of the tournament, have made four changes to their starting team following the 19-18 loss to New Zealand at the weekend.

South Africa: Ruan Pienaar, JP Pietersen, Jaque Fourie, Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana, Morne Steyn, Fourie du Preez; Pierre Spies, Juan Smith, Heinrich Brussow, Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, John Smit (capt), Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira. Res: Chiliboy Ralepelle, Jannie du Plessis, Andries Bekker, Schalk Burger, Ricky Januarie, Adi Jacobs, Frans Steyn.

    BOKKE
“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

So what,.,,, he has not played a test at full back... i look forward to box kicks inside his 22 as fullback... The Boks are thinking they’re infallible and that’s a weakness and colossal mistake Mr Blackie... VD thinks the match is so easily won he can experiment with his line up and test positions to meet his contractual agreement...

oh dear... muddie my friend.. Pienaar is as versatile as AAC. he has a great box kick but an even better torpie.. definitely a better pick than Steyn at Full back in my opinion, far better in defence and has a good counter attacking mindset.

Steyn is WAAAY overrated only reason hes in the team is his ability to break tackles and his long range kicking ability..

Smells like a running game people!!!!

What does that have to do with it?

Whilst this may be the case, do I have to remind you of some of AAC's performances last year in the Wallaby 15 jersey despite AAC being a "versatile player"

    I can't believe I agree with Muddy

Neither can I, even if he was trying to be funny.

Pienaar may well be more than capable at 15. We'll see.

    PS. Carna Bunnies.

If you guys saw the Rugby Club last night... Rod Kaffer had some interesting thoughts about combating the Boks kicking game and turning it into counter attack.

Might work but the players dropping back have to be adaptable. Chip'n'chase into the pocket behind the first line can be a very effective foil to that tactic and they need to cover that area before rushing back for the counter.

is it going to be wet?

... that will be a key factor on what sort of game the boks will bring out.. WET = deep penetrating kicks and forward play, DRY = same boring box kicking game and MAYBE some running for a change...
