Barry Hall to take on SBW

Barry Hall tipped to make professional boxing debut in Perth

    Michael Washbourne

    July 13, 2009 03:50pm

FORMER Sydney Swans spearhead Barry Hall is tipped to make his professional boxing debut against Sonny Bill Williams in Perth on Australia Day next year.

Boxing writer and former SportFM commentator Chris Korner believes Hall will square off against the former NRL ace on the undercard of the rematch between Danny Green and Anthony Mundine.

Korner, who is close to both the Green and Mundine camps, said Hall’s sudden retirement last week opened the door for the 32-year-old to begin his professional boxing career.

“Barry Hall is close with Danny Green’s camp and Sonny Bill is close with Mundine, so we’re looking at an AFL-NRL showdown to say the least,” Korner said. Perhaps Mr Korner hasn't been paying attention to the news over the past 12 months. Another thing isn't Australia day in the French Rugby season?

“It’s going to have a massive build up and will be fantastic for the sport.”

Korner said a formal announcement on the date and venue for the fight could be made as early as next month.

Green has previously expressed a desire to stage the rematch on his home turf on Australia’s national day.

Two of the greatest mismatches in the history of "footy boxing". SBW would be well advised to stay in France if he does not want to become another victim.

I didn't see much of SBW's boxing debut, but based upon that, and three or four punches in the AFL, I'd suggest Sonny's gunna get his ass handed to him.

The match won't happen anyway, because the Mundine backed fighter isn't a lay down mysere

Saw a bit and SBW looked to handle himself OK against a Neville. Big Bad Barry will likely be a lot tougher, having a been a good amateur boxer in his pre - AFL days.

I would almost be tempted to go and see that fight - to see barry get some of the payback he's unfairly dished out over the years!

SBW can "box" all he likes but Bazza will just hit him and it'll be all over.
    Tysonesque in the first round.

SBW handled himself pretty well in his fight. however he was always going to win it, so we cant judge him based on one fight.
it will be interesting to see if he has any more fights later on this year. hopefully against some better opponents.

    round one:

he allowed himself to be pushed up into the ropes and the corners quite a bit. and he grabs without hesitation. the hit late in the round was perfectly timed, as gurr's hand comming together over his face guided SBW's fist into him. but it could have come sooner. he didnt step into his punches when him and gurr were trading blows either. he didnt lean or balance himself to maximise the impact when he connected.

in the second he balances himself better. and opens up more. but i would really like to see him lean into one and give it everything he has. he could have knocked gurr down to end the match instead of giving him another uppercut. and going in for the punch to the back of the head. thats just f**king discusting...
