WA pub pours another stout record

    17th July 2009, 6:00 WST

It might be the pride of the Irish but a pub in West Leederville has a few Dockers and Western Force supporters to thank for its record-breaking sales of Guinness.

J.B. O’Reilly’s in Cambridge Street is officially the biggest seller of Guinness in Australia for the second year in a row.

The pub sold 82,016 pints of the famous Irish stout last financial year, outselling popular chain bars like P.J. O’Brien’s in Melbourne and Scruffy Murphy’s in Sydney.

Owner Paul North said he had his local clientele to thank as well as Fremantle and Western Force supporters who regularly stopped in before and after games at nearby Subiaco Oval for a pint or two.

“Dockers supporters drink Guinness and Eagles supporters drink chardonnay,” he said. “And Western Force fans also like their Guinness.”

Mr North said Guinness, traditionally a working man’s drink, was becoming more of a sophisticated tipple.

“A lot more women are drinking it than they used to,” he said. For those new to Guinness, he might sometimes add a drop of blackcurrant cordial to sweeten the flavour a little.

J.B. O’Reilly’s will also be the official WA location for the Sir Arthur Guinness 250th anniversary celebrations in September.

The event will be celebrating 250 years since the first drop of Guinness was poured with commemorative events being held around the world.

Mr North said that pending Town of Cambridge approval, he hoped to set up a marquee on September 25 with room for about 350 people.
