An infection has forced departing Western Force favourite AJ Whalley to undertake an emergency operation to remove a boil on his calf.

Whalley was due to fly to France to join Dax on Saturday but instead underwent surgery to remove a significant portion of muscle.

Doctors have told Whalley he cannot run for at least six weeks.

While WAtoday.com.au understands the French outfit intends to honour its agreement with the likable prop, Whalley's bid for first team action early in his European sojourn will be severely hampered.

Teammates at last Friday's end-of-season awards paid tribute to the 117kg front-rower, who was one of the most popular members of the squad.
