Sadly, leaving for personal reasons on the day of the game sounds like a family thing.

2009 SHUTE SHIELD ROUND 13 MATCH REVIEWS
    Saturday, 27 June 2009

Eastern Suburbs have given their finals aspirations a boost with a 28-10 victory over Eastwood at T.G. Millner Field.

Going into round 13, the Beasties sat fifth on the ladder with a one point advantage over three teams including Eastwood, however today’s victory provides more breathing space.

Joe Azar crossed for a double for Easts, while 2007 Ken Catchpole Medallist Gavin Debartolo nailed 13 points with the boot.

Eastern Suburbs 28 (Joe Azar 2, Tom Egan tries; Gavin Debartolo 3 pens, 2 cons) d Eastwood 10 (Mark Frost, John Grant tries) at T.G. Millner Field. Referee: Steve Hardy. HT: Eastwood 5-3.

A bit more background as to what happened post-Force...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Right Wing Gavin DeBartolo
    Height: 6’2”
    Weight: 209
    Position: fullback/wing
    Caps: 0
    International Scoring: 0
Current Club: Eastern Suburbs – Australia
    Birthdate: March 29, 1982
    Born: Sydney, Australia
    Hometown: Bondi, Sydney
    Current Residence: Sydney

Highlights: Brought up playing Rugby League, Gavin first tried Union at the age of 20 and it wasn’t long before Gavin’s spectacular speed and footwork had him selected in the Australian Sevens pool. Gavin was the leading point and try scorer in the NSW Premier competition in 2005 and was signed to the Western Force for their inaugural season. After making his Super 14 debut in 2006, Gavin was stuck behind the Wallabies – Scott Staniforth, Drew Mitchell, Cameron Shepard and Digby Ione for a Super 14 spot in 2007 so he chose to return to Sydney where once again he became the leading point scorer in the whole competition. Being considered as Peter Hewatt’s replacement for the Waratah’s in 2008, Gavin preferred to head overseas to continue his rugby development and he benefited from a different style of rugby at La Rochelle in France before illness to his fiancée’s mother forced them to both return to Australia. Now Gavin has sorted the family problems he is keen to head overseas again to continue his rugby.
