Peter O'Meara - The unsung hero of RugbyWA

I will like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the man the man helped make Rugby in Western Australia what it is today, and whilst I am singling out one man I am sure that there was a team of assistants and support staff who were there doing the hard yards that. But here is to Peter O'Meara.

Imagine if you would that the ARU announce that you have won the right for the fourth Australian franchise to be a part of Super Rugby, and then the ARU tell you that they will not assist you with recruitment, there will be no special concessions. You are on your own.

So Peter and his team went out and aggressively recruited the players identified by the coaching team. Why? He had no choice in the matter, He had no assistance. What was he going to do?? Oh excuse me Mr Sharpe - yes hi we were wondering if you had considered playing rugby in Perth. Yes, Perth. Well, you know where Mt Isa is? Yes well its South West from there.

The AFL gave assistance to their new clubs. Hell, the Sydney Swans moved to Sydney over 20 years ago, they still get assistance from the AFL. The Brisbane Bears/Lions won 3 Premierships in a row - they still get assistance.

So Peter O'Meara trod on some toes along the way. BIG DEAL. You don't make cakes without breaking an egg or two along the way. RugbyWA got fined. Well at least it was RugbyWA, they can afford to pay their fines. Imagine if NSWRU got fined - they would be on the phone to the ARU the next day asking for more money to pay their own fine for them.

After 4 years of Super Rugby. The Western Force have 10 players selected to play in the Wallabies, and the Western Force were successful against all 3 of other Australian Franchises. I hate to imagine how much we would have struggled if we didn't have a strong CEO like Peter O'Meara in our formative years.

So from this Western Force Fan, to Mr Peter O'Meara.

    THANK YOU

Brisbane don't anymore (not since 2004), and the concessions to Syndey have been cut back to nothing more then 7.5% of the cap higher then the other clubs to offset the cost of living in Sydney (increased cost according to several sources I have read)

But you are correct in saying that the two clubs have recieved assistance, and alot more then the ARU gave RugbyWA when the 4th franchise was granted

    other then that good post

No, not at all. There have been some posts that have attacked Peter O'Meara's actions. I thought it was time he was defended.

So you think the Western Force is going along well do you? On the field yes but behind the scene in the board room I think it is not fantastic, they didnt handle JM, issues well I think they have been step all over about the stadium. Hard job but all CEO jobs of all sports is thankless.

Nice Lampoon… with no recovery… with no list of achievements?… However I’m sure Peter O’Meara thanks you in reminding everyone that he was once the man who built the house of cards…

    Dissappointing muddy.

You ask people to give there opinions, and then you critisize them and dismiss them with a couple of throw away lines.

The fact that Peter O'Meara was in an unwinnable position and on a hiding to nothing.

He was able to put together a squad capable of being competative in the toughest Provincial competition in the world without any support from this nations Union. I would call that one hell of an achievement.

I love Muddy's, and Eastern states media's, crap about a 'house of cards'. There is no house of cards, or at least not unless the Force becomes untenable- which I find highly unlikely.

What exactly did O'Meara do? Firepower this Firepower that blah blah blah. That means nothing. Pretty much every player, Giteau aside, ended up with their Firepower commitments covered by other sponsors. The Force lost a bit of sponsorship dollar- big deal- they will probably come back stronger from the experience and they made enough money prior to the drop to cover the loss. So basically all that has happened after all that Firepower furore is that Giteau left the club. Hey shit happens. He left the Brumbies and its not like their 'house of cards' collapsed.

For all the controversy and the media beat up all that happened was that one player joined a club and that same player left a club somewhat disgruntled. Meh. The way some people describe him you'd think he was a war criminal.
