RWC rights-holder tips England, Japan as Cup hosts

    30th June 2009, 10:00 WST

The rights-holder of the Rugby World Cup has recommended England be host in 2015 and Japan in 2019.

Rugby World Cup Limited, which owns all rights associated with the tournament and is under the control of the IRB, described its two choices on Tuesday as achieving a balance between making money and then developing new rugby markets.

Italy and South Africa had also issued tenders for the world’s third-largest sporting event.

The IRB said in a statement: “A tournament in England would allow the IRB to maximise funding available for investment in the game” while a “World Cup in Japan would provide a gateway to the further development and expansion of the game in Asia.”

The IRB will select the hosts on July 28 in Dublin.

I recall talking about something similar prior to the last announcement, but I think a RWC based in one of the "Home Nations" (say England going on this) but with some of the minor fixtures from each pool being played in Eastern Europe would be great for the code.
Italy, Romania, Georgia and Russia are all looking like making it this time, for each of them to have a home fixture against perhaps the number two team in each pool would be a huge promotion for the code.

England is easy - we can all fly or drive around - no language problems - it's a safe bet for RWL in difficult times.

Besides which we will be kidless in time for Japan
