    RugbyWA Press Release

RugbyWA, the Perth Glory and West Australian Rugby League have today launched an independent report calling for an upgrade to Members Equity Stadium.

The independent report has been produced by L.E.K Consulting and was commissioned by the ‘rectangular’ football codes to assist their work with the State Government to secure $73 million for Town of Vincent to move ahead quickly with the proposed upgrade of MES.

The report finds that Subiaco Oval, the current venue for Emirates Western Force home matches is unsuitable for hosting rugby matches and that this has led to declining attendance and member numbers for the Force.

The report concludes that a move by the Emirates Western Force to an upgraded Members Equity Stadium would lead to higher attendances and an increase in membership numbers.

An upgrade would also benefit Perth Glory and WARL with expected higher attendances and better corporate facilities.

Commenting on the report RugbyWA CEO Greg Harris said:

"RugbyWA has performed very well financially and our fundamentals are strong. However, as the report stipulates, the implications of continuing at Subiaco Oval in the long term calls into question the future of Super 14 rugby in Perth."

"This independent report by a highly respected international consulting firm clearly finds that a move to an upgraded Members Equity Stadium is crucial to the survival and future success of the Emirates Western Force.”

"Our supporters are voting with their feet and sending a clear message that Subiaco Oval is unsuitable as a venue for watching a rugby match.

Harris said prompt attention to the Stadium issue is paramount.

"This is an urgent issue for us. If we get the go ahead from the State Government in the next months the Force could be playing at a fully upgraded, 25,000 capacity Members Equity by the 2012 season,” he said.

Codes combine to call for stadium upgrade- The West

The State Government’s rejection of plans to upgrade Subiaco Oval or develop a new multi-purpose stadium in the near future has not tempered the desire of three of WA’s football codes for an upgrade of the rectangular Members Equity Stadium.

RugbyWA, Perth Glory FC and the WA Rugby League this morning made a joint call to the State Government to inject funds into the further redevelopment of the East Perth stadium into a top-class sporting facility.

The West Australian today revealed that a report from Melbourne-based company LEK Consulting says Perth is in danger of losing Super 14 rugby franchise the Western Force if a suitable rectangular facility is not built.

The most viable option is a $73 million upgrade of Members Equity Stadium, a redevelopment that could save the Force and provide a massive boost to soccer and rugby league in WA.

“The upgrade is essential for the long-term viability of the Western Force, it’s as simple as that,” outgoing Force chief executive Greg Harris said.

    The Rest..

Is the potential collapse of the club what it takes to get front cover (Anzac liftout not withstanding) and editorial coverage in the West? Of course, attempting to turn it into a Perth vs (evil east coast) Melbounre sh!t fight, just make make the average sandgroper care.

I can't say I'm impressed - this is going to create a massive rod for the back of RugbyWA and the ARU. The report may be altogether reasonable and detailed, but it will be quoted from selectively in articles supporting the view of the author and the message distorted.

I am particularly worried about the statement that, even with a move to MES, the Force will continue to run a deficit unless the upgrade is done. That sounds disturbingly like an ultimatum, and with the budget being due before the final SANZAR presentation to News, it is a very high risk strategy.

What they are basically saying is that even if the money is made available the Force has three years of running in the red ahead of it, but if the WA Gov't dithers on the committment they are financially doomed. So if the money is not in the budget in May, the ARU will have do something. When it is the club itself saying they would be financially untenable, I doubt the ARU could take a "wait and see" approach for the next five years and there would have to be a re-write of the Super comp proposal due in June to incorporate a relocation to Melbourne. So I just hope it is not a bluff, because RugbyWA has gone all in.
