    Force Fail to Fire

The Western Force dropped their first game on the road tonight in a rather lackluster performance against a resurgent Chiefs.

Repeated basic handling errors, missed tackles and poor kicking let the Force down whilst the Chiefs maintained their composure and eventually walked away with a 4 try bonus point victory.

Lelia Masaga, Brendon Leonard and Richard Kahui all collected first half tries to give the home team a 21-6 advantage at the break, before Messam’s five-pointer after 82 minutes sealed the bonus point.

In a nightmare start to the match for the Emirates Western Force, some feeble left side defence saw explosive Chiefs winger Lelia Masaga slip three tackles and power his way to the tryline to put the home side on the board with just 45 seconds of the match expired.

Assisted by a strong breeze in the opening half, the WA side couldn’t seize the advantage, with handling and defensive errors offering the Chiefs plenty of opportunities in attacking territory.

But the Chiefs themselves were having trouble holding the ball, which gave the away team an opportunity to work their way into the contest.

Stephen Donald had missed a penalty goal in the sixth minute before Matt Giteau made no mistake with his first attempt of the night, pushing the ball through the uprights two minutes later to register first points for the visitors.

Cameron Shepherd closed the gap further four minutes later when he converted a booming penalty attempt from beyond the halfway line to make the score 7-6 inside 12 minutes.

The stop-start contest continued for twenty minutes before Messam sparked the Chiefs to their second try.

Messam’s break was followed by a mid-field bust by Stephen Donald who drew the fullback Drew Mitchell and put Leonard away on the inside for the try.

After Shepherd missed a second penalty attempt from beyond 50 metres in the 35th minute, the home team capitalized immediately when Kahui broke away for the third try and to set up a 15-point advantage.

Trailing 21-6 at the break, the visitors needed to strike first in the second half and did, albeit 16 minutes into the period when Tamaiti Horua pounced on a loose ball from a Josh Valentine roost to race 20 metres for an opportunistic five-pointer.

Giteau converted and the gap was reduced to eight at 21-13, but a penalty against Force centre Ryan Cross for a dangerous tackle gave Stephen Donald a chance to nudge his team further ahead.

Donald added the three points from 47 metres out and at 24-13 with a quarter of the match to play the match remained in the balance.

Coach John Mitchell rang the changes to inject some fresh legs in search of a spark for his side, but it was the Chiefs who found one as their skipper eventually crashed over after the full-time hooter to celebrate his team’s first victory of the season.

I think the title should have stopped after two words

FORCE FAIL seems pretty fitting to me. Where is my teacher with her big F stamp when I need it!

    Ahh... I see now.

I don't BELIEVE they missed as many tackles as us. How is that possible!? Why couldn't we take advantage of those 24 missed tackles like they did? We just completely went missing. No player played well, there were all on another planet. That's two games this season we've not turned up at all... Not a good record.

Because we had a major case of the fumbles. Junior knocked on at one stage just as he was running through a hole (inside the Chiefs 22) in the Chiefs line
