    Captain Bam Bam

Has anyone else noticed the bigger role Bam Bam is taking on field in more of a Captains positon. There were a few times on Saturday where he was the one asking the questions of the ref (sometimes because he was the supposed infringer) but others because he wanted an answer for the team?

Does anyone else think that perhaps it would be better for him to step up and be the Captain and give Sharpie (who is far from HIS best) a chance to concentrate on his game rether than the team??

Certainly I hope it happens in 2010.

Spot on, Sharpie is doing a great job and with Gits on his way out give Bam Bam a bit more say to enable him to grow into the captaincy role when sharpie retires. However, we still need leadership in the backline and Gits is still the logical choice there.

Great idea. Pocock will make a great captain- 1- He is clean as a whistle and 2- He will soon, if not already, be world class. But then again perhaps if he is concentrating on being captain he might lose focus from his development. Definitely worth a try though.

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

you dont want to punish Giteua to much for signing with the Brumbies, you run the risk of alienating him as a player and not getting as much out of him as you should.

I would leave it as it is at the moment, possibly name two vice-captains instead though.

As I recall there used to be two VC's until Fava cocked up.

I have no doubt, departure excepted, that Bam will be the Captain after Sharpie.
As I mentioned right back at the first hme victory, he was the first to break away from the celebrations and start shaking hands with the Canes.
That to me confirmed what I already kind of knew and I have been sold on his leadership capacity ever since.

As to when, I'm not big on the whole Captain standing down but still playing business. I know it happens quite a bit but to me it is demeaning to the previous Captain, confusing for the group and the two involved and is generally a bad sign.

To me, assuming we are talking about a long term leader, far better to let the previous Captain go out "on top" as the leader and have a fresh start with a full off season for the new leadership structure to gel.

So, you would assume at then 33 Sharpey will be looking to retire or head north post World Cup, seeing Bam take over at a still comparitively very young 22 in S14 2012.

While it is great to see him showing leadership which (usually) equals maturity, it doesn't mean they should burden him with titles and extra official work load just yet.
