Western Force set sights on South African Peter Grant

    http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/stor...005401,00.html
THE Western Force is hoping to capture Springboks and Stormers five-eighth Peter Grant as a replacement for Matt Giteau.
The approach, revealed yesterday in The Sunday Times, has been confirmed in South Africa by Grant's manager Chris de Beer, who is reported as saying he is expecting an offer in writing next week.

It is understood Grant's parents moved to Perth recently which could give the Force leverage in signing him as an overseas marquee player.

Grant, who has five South African caps, tops a short-list of players including Luke McAlister, who will leave English club Sale this year.

It is understood the Hurricanes are also interested in the All Black.

Grant was tipped to make the Springbok No. 10 jumper his own in 2007 after his debut against Australia, but was hampered by a shoulder injury that required surgery last year.

The 24-year-old, who can also play centre, has made 35 appearances for the Cape Town-based Stormers.

He is also being chased by French club Racing Metro and met with club representatives last month.

Last year, Grant was offered a big deal by a Japanese club.

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

It's becuase it's the rules and we want to continue to improve and make a profit. If overseas players were not allowed you'd probably moan about us poaching your players. Until we have a strong enough local base to choose from we have to live on what we can. Slag that if you like but it was pretty damn obvious that would be the case for quite a few years after the birth of the franchise. Even if it had went to melbourne the same issue would have arisen.

Despite the apparent wishes of your Eastern colleagues we will survive and if it means buying in players then so be it. We'll still make a profiit, we will still have the largest and best support and, guess what, we can afford to do it unlike other teams I could mention.

difference between your rant and reality is that nsw rugby would exist if no one went to the game at all, it creates revenue streams in other areas and is responsable for over half of the total australian ratings on fox. perth is a team built on fan support and those fans are walking and your moving to a stadium that doesnt have capacity for them to come back.

you dont have money to buy them, you have third parties that have not only you coach but ex board members invovled in them offering to pay on your behalf! *alarm bells* there is enough talent at 5/8 to spread across this country, there is enough talent full stop. i have something against the marquee rule in general, its crap. your overpaying players that if they were any good would remain in there homelands as to be eligable for there national team! thats not just perth but across the board.

also, the "profit" you refer to is creative accounting at its best! why is your club cutting back and downsizing if it is growing?

Ah WJ, as I suspected your response would not have any substance and you even manage to contradict yourself.

And just as a wee heads up, creative accounting is generally used to show as little profit as possible.

I actually rate Peter Grant pretty well. He's a good flyhalf with decent skills.
And like the article said, his parents moved over to Perth recently, and his cousins and uncle are over in perth as well. Won't mind having him take over the flyhalf reigns. But then again, won't mind seeing Luke McAlister over here as well!

i think he will be an excellent catch if he decides to make the move west
he has great skills and we will get alot more saffas support as said before
if he thinks the club is on the way up thats if he decides to sign, he may spread the word and may get a few more high class players joining, maybe a few more saffas but could encourage a lot more players to see there way west
i say a good approaching by force!

its a terrible approach, he isnt eligable to play for the wallabies, he would just be taking up space. there are four teams, between beale, barnes, the brumbies dude and hangers, the force have options locally, the notion that playing outside a great player can somehow help JOC develop is an excuse for poor coaching, if he is all that, then he should be able to learn just as much from study and coaching playing next to a decent player.

I recall in the earliest days of the Force, maybe even pre-naming, talk of a group of Saffa players ready to come over to ply their trade in the WA Club scene while they gained residency to specifically trial for the Force.
Did anything ever come of that, at least at club level?
