    Victorian Bushfires

As most, if not all, of you know Victoria is experiencing some of/if not the worst bushfires to ravage a state in our country's history.

Some of you know I live in the hills and if a bushfire was to take over the area I would inevitably lose everything that my family has worked towards. Therefore I'm interested to see if anyone else is willing to donate clothes/toys/manchester, no matter how little or how much. Some of these people quite literally have nothing but the clothes on their back and I'm sure would be grateful for anything. It costs nothing to donate the clothes you no longer wear or the toys or blankets you no longer use.
At this stage I'm guaging response/interest and if there's enough people are willing to donate and if there are I will you let you know more details accordingly.

If you are interested please PM me or post a reply in the thread.
    Thanks.

Further to Laura's excellent suggestion- I was wondering if people would be interested in raising some funds on Friday for the Red Cross Appeal. Today I recevied an email from my dear employer, and in addition to their own donation, will be matching the donations made by employees dollar-for-dollar. If we can organise a TWF donation (and everybody is agreed) I can submit it in my name and help the victims get a bit more bang from our collective bucks.

Obviously if you need tax receipts and stuff this isn't the option for you- but for people who are like me who either don't care or forget about/lose them before July anyway it's an opportunity to maximise the funds going in that direction.

Sorry to put organisers on the spot here- but would you guys agree to having a bit of a collection going in conjunction with the usual gold-coin for the BBQ?

I don't think it's my place to say yay or nay to individuals collecting for such causes - I'll throw a few bucks in ...

I have donated to Red Cross online for this.

Whilst I was there I noted they listed a few other organisations. None of them at the time (yesterday evening) were collecting or would be accepting gifts like clothing and so forth. Just cash at this stage.

The problem with things - is that someone has to get it there - they normally need heaps of money to freight it

There are a number of charities taking monetary donations:

    * Phone 1800 811 700
    * Any NAB, ANZ, Westpac or Commonwealth Bank branch
    * Any Bunnings store
    * By direct deposit to the Victorian Bushfire Relief Fund - BSB 082-001, Account number 860-046-797
    *Myer Bushfire Appeal
All proceeds to the Salvation Army. Donate at any Victorian Myer store
    * Donations to the Victorian Bushfire Relief Fund can be made at any National Australia Bank. BSB: 082 001 - Account: 860 046 797
    *CFA bushfire hotline - 1800 240 667, http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au
    *Salvation Army - http://www.salvationarmy.org.au/SALV/HOMEPAGE/pc=HOME
*St Vincent de Paul - http://www.vinnies.org.au/home.cfm?nocache=932312
    *Wildlife Rescue - http://www.wildlifevictoria.org.au/cms/index.php
*Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund - http://relieffund.org.au/

Also the Red Cross are asking for Blood Donations, but no one is yet taking donations for clothes/toys/manchester. So here's a chance to get on board and donate now and have it ready for when they need it not after the fact when the people have spent their donated money on clothes already. Everybody needs clothes to wear and blankets to keep warm even if they aren't in their own home.

money is the best donation you can make - it costs nothing to get it to people and they have no house to put any material donation in anyway!!

good idea laura. my grandparents' farm was directly in the line of fire on saturday, but luckily a wind change came and brave CFA fire fighters contained it to small spot fires which have been burnt out. as lucky as they are, unfortunately not everyone is over there.

This is from another forum I frequent:

Starting point top left is Kinglake area, finishing point top right is Marysville. Down at the bottom (yellow X) is where the poster lives. The Red arrows as listed show the wind path.

Reckon the best way to donate goods is via your local Salvo store - they are on the ground at the moment in Vic helping the people directly.

    And another just in:

Australian cricket is offering cricket fans a chance to do their bit to help bushfire victims by supporting an appeal that will run throughout the Channel 9 telecast of Tuesday’s Commonwealth Bank Series match at the Adelaide Oval between Australia and New Zealand.

Cricket Australia (CA) Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said fans wanting to help can make a donation to a special Commonwealth Bank Series Bushfire Appeal fund by visiting a Commonwealth Bank branch or heading to www.cricket.com.au/bushfireappeal, and donating into the Commonwealth Bank appeal account (BSB 06 2000, Account 1207 5700).

Just found this at The West Online

"Generous Western Australians have already donated more than 15 tonnes of household items to victims of Victoria’s deadly bushfires.

Australia’s worst-ever natural disaster has so far killed 173 people and burnt through more than 330,000ha of bush.

    etc...

Father Morrison said each State had been given different priorities for donations, with WA asked to send new blankets, towels, sheets, toiletries and brand new clothing for children aged 5-14 years.

Donations can be taken to Father Morrison’s crisis centre at the rear of 18 Collin Street, West Perth."
