When I lived in Auckland I stayed in this pretty cool place called the Waldorf Apartments (there are two the cheap but equally good one is not on the waterfront but the waterfront is nothing special). Pretty sure for a month-long stay you could get a nice studio appartment for $300NZ a week which would be cheaper than hostels probably. For one or two weeks it would be closer to $400NZ I think. Only place I would definitely steer clear of is the Auckland Central Backpackers. That place is awful.

In Christchurch there is a pretty nice place called Drifters. When I was there they offered like a kind of weekly deal in a seperate house at $110NZ/week per person. Its far from exotic but great value for money.

Hope that helps. If anyone wants any advice on places to see while you are there I am happy to point out some of the good spots and have been through practically all of the South Island (not in ski season though).

I assume it is still too early, but having been away, have I missed them announcing where the big guns will be based?
That is, cutting to the chase, will the Wallabies be playing in one location or several or still waiting to hear?

    Watch out for this one...............

Kia Ora you fullahs ( and gidday dingos) .

Three Australians and three Maori's are travelling by train to a
Rugby match at the World Cup. At the station, the three
Aussies each buy a ticket and watch as the three Maori's buy just one
    ticket between them.

"How are the three of you going to travel on only one ticket?" asks
one of the Aussies. "Watch and learn bro," answers one of the Maori's .

They all board the train. The Aussies take their respective seats
but all three Maori's cram into a toilet and close the door behind them.
Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around
collecting tickets. He knocks on the toilet door and says, "Ticket
    please."
The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket
in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on.
The Aussies see this and agree it was quite a clever idea. So after
the game, they decide to copy the Maori's on the return trip and save
some money (being clever with money, and all that).
When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the
return trip. To their astonishment, the Maori's don't buy a ticket at
    all!!
"How are you going to travel without a ticket?" says one perplexed
    Aussie.
"Watch and learn bro ," answers a Maori .
When they board the train the three Aussies cram into a toilet and
soon after the three Maori's cram into another nearby. The train
    departs.
Shortly afterwards, one of the Maori's leaves the toilet and walks
over to the toilet where the Aussies are hiding. He knocks on the door
    and says, "Ticket please."

    Lots of rugby there?

OK, which country of any significance to the rugby market (or most other markets) celebrates new year first?

The one in Auckland may well do (unless you get in early) but I'd be surprised if they did for the backpacker flats in Christchurch.
