$45m bid to win World Cup

$45m bid to win World Cup

    December 10, 2008 12:00am

EXCLUSIVE: AUSTRALIA'S hopes of hosting the soccer World Cup will be galvanised today when the Federal Government announces $45 million of funding for a bid to bring the 2018 tournament to these shores.
The unprecedented financial backing means Football Federation Australia has the resources to mount a serious bid for the world's biggest sporting event.

World governing body FIFA is expected to make a decision in two years on who will host the 2018 and possibly 2022 World Cups.

Although Australia faces a huge challenge in beating other contenders, including England and the US, the statement of intent behind the Government backing is crucial to a winning strategy.

The decision to approve the federal spending has been months in the making, with soccer chiefs making several trips to Canberra to present detailed models of the overall benefits in hosting a tournament that is sure to include games at the MCG and Telstra Dome.

Federal Sports Minister Kate Ellis and FFA chairman Frank Lowy will detail the process by which the money will be spent, which is likely to include drawing up detailed plans for investment in infrastructure such as transport and hotels.

They will also try and head off criticism from other sports about Government funding for soccer that will approach $78 million, by highlighting benefits to the country in terms of upgraded facilities and an influx of tourists.

"The World Cup campaign is a separate project which is not taking funds from other sports," Ellis said last night.

"Hosting the World Cup would provide Australia a unique opportunity with great benefits to the wider community, not just the football fraternity . . . and bring significant economic benefit to Australia including boosts to tourism, infrastructure and jobs around the country."

Recent research by economist Dr John Williams of the New South Wales Parliamentary Library estimated that hosting the 2018 World Cup could contribute up to $5.4 billion to the economy.

The last World Cup, two years ago in Germany, was estimated to have brought two million international visitors and provided work to about 85,000 people.

The confirmation of funding is the culmination of a charm offensive nationally, and with every State Government to ensure each is aware, and supportive, of the legislative and funding requirements of a serious bid.

As well as major upgrades of transport networks and accommodation, a successful bid will require at least 12 stadiums with a seating capacity of 40,000 or more.

A list of suitable venues and potential new ones has already been compiled in an audit by consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers.

It is believed venues listed in the report for consideration include Sydney Football Stadium, ANZ Stadium and EnergyAustralia Stadium in NSW, the MCG and Telstra Dome in Melbourne, Adelaide's AAMI Stadium, a new venue in Perth, and Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

The Socceroos made the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany after a 32-year wait to build on the success of Johnny Warren's pioneers in West Germany in 1974.

Having beaten Uruguay in a historic penalty shootout in Sydney to qualify, Australia advanced to the round of 16 after a 3-1 win against Japan, a 2-0 loss to Brazil and a 2-2 draw against Croatia.

It lost 1-0 to eventual winners Italy. A controversial 93rd-minute penalty converted by Francesco Totti ended Australia's dream run.

A sucessful world cup bid would most likely see life breathed back into the Multi-purpose stadium concept, depending on where the dosh to pay for the 'new venue' is suppossed to come from- the 45 million is for upgrades to all potential venues in Aus. If the money were come from the state govenment it'll get spent on a footy oval. If it comes from the Feds, perhaps they might be able to take a slightly bigger picture look at it and think about dedicated rectangles. Depends what sort of games they would look at playing in Perth- 60,000 seats vs 35,000. How small is Hindmarsh stadium?? They've overlooked the rectangle element there in favour of seats at AAMI.

Edit... Ok I checked, it's 16,500- which could potentially have 5,000 seats added to it a'la for the Olympics football competition.

We'll use World Cup bid fund wisely: FFA

    http://www.thewest.com.au/aapstory.a...oryName=536565

Football Federation Australia (FFA) chairman Frank Lowy says he will scour the world to find the best possible team to ensure Australia succeeds in its quest to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

After the federal government announced a $45.6 million package to help the FFA bid for the football showpiece, Lowy said the funding will ensure Australia has a genuine chance of hosting the event.

"We are delighted the government has given us this sum and I can assure you that it will be spent wisely, there will be no lunches and dinners, it will be used for professional services," Lowy said.

"We will hire from Australia and overseas the very best people to show that Australia can do this job properly.

"We have had two Olympics, two rugby world cups and Australia's strength in this field is unquestionable.

    ....

Dr Stavros also believes a lack of suitable stadiums outside of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane could pose problems.

FIRA regulatioms stipulate that for a stadium just to hold a World Cup group game, it must have 40,000 seats (i think)

Cool, wasn't sure since they mention "Energy Australia Stadium", a couple of smaller stadiums might do. Could also be people shooting off at the mouth with no idea what they're talking about either.

so Australia has how many stadiums that meet that criteria??

SFS, MCG, Suncorp, Stadium Australia (ANZ Stadium i think it's know as these days) Telstra Dome, Subiaco, AAMI Stadium, GABBA, SCG

and only 3 of those are Rectangular, and only 2 of these are dedicated rectangualr stadiums

(fill in the gaps if I have missed anything)

    What's your definition of rectangular?

There's 2 dedicated's in that list (SFS, Suncorp)

ANZ has a few rows that swing in on the sideline, and Telstra Dome can be configured (maybe the Football world cup would be reaosn enough for them, even if a rugby test isn't)

ANZ and the MCG are the only grounds big enough to host semi-finals/finals:

    (b) for the opening Match, semi-finals and finals (excluding Media and VIPs) min.
60,000. Total capacity including VIP’s and Media to be 65 000 net capacity making
provision for security and future new media requirements

it was configured as a rectangle once for a Melbourne Victory game...possibly a semi final, it was referred to in the Langoulant report. I believe it was never reconfigured again as a result of AFL concern about pitch stability issues (not sure If I'm talking out my journalist-hole for that one though)

"Perth is in danger of missing out on hosting World Cup soccer matches because it does not have a venue capable of meeting stringent requirements set by the sport’s governing body, FIFA."

    from http://www.thewest.com.au/default.as...ntentID=112624

"Although the 43,000-capacity Subiaco Oval surpasses FIFA’s 40,000 minimum requirement for group games, the venue provides a poor spectator experience for soccer and rugby because of its oval configuration."
