TEAM OF THE WEEK
Andrew Symonds. Gorn fishing. And may be away for some time. Sent home from the Australian cricket team for preferring to go fishing instead of attending a compulsory team meeting.
Berrick Barnes. An injury prevented him from playing last week in the Wallabies' Test against the Springboks. The subsequent debacle - a 53-8 record drubbing - made everyone realise just how crucial he is to the Wallabies these days.
Sydney FC. Kicked a lazy five goals against Perth last weekend.
"Lethal" Leigh Matthews. Resigned as Brisbane Lions coach this week, and will be replaced by former Lions captain Michael Voss.
Killer Kowalski. The great man! Died last Saturday aged 81. Let us hope, at least, that Mario Milano is still going strong, and not in that great wrestling ring in the sky with Killer and Haystacks Calhoun. (See story.)
Lance Franklin. The Hawthorn player kicked 100 goals for the year last Saturday, and is, surprisingly, the first indigenous player to do so.
The Australian Schools First XV. The team announced to play Fiji's under-18 team in the curtain-raiser to next weekend's Bledisloe includes a West Australian halfback, three players from King's and Nick Buchanan, son of former Australian cricket coach John Buchanan.
Doris B. Surely, the oldest Wallabies supporter in the country. She turned 100 two Saturdays ago and, with 40 family and friends on hand, was thrilled to receive a card signed by all the Wallabies titled "Age is nothing". Happy birthday, Mrs Doris.
The Rooty Hill Junior Rugby club. Had five of its teams playing in the Metropolitan West grand finals at Two Blues Park last weekend, a fantastic achievement for a small, new junior club.
Steve Menzies. One of rugby league's greatest ambassadors, played his last regular-season game at Brookvale Oval on Monday night.
Sonny Boy Williams. That, at least, was what a British rugby commentator called him last weekend, when he slashed over for a try for Toulon. Earlier in the movement he called him "Fitzgerald".
