THE rising birth rate of footy clubs in Queensland is challenging rugby union to consider a Super 14 side for the Gold Coast.
Rugby must shake off its near-invisible winter presence and cannot simply nourish fans and the code with the one-off scale of the Bledisloe Cup blockbuster at Suncorp Stadium on September 13.
In the three months of June, July and August, the only top-tier, live rugby viewing in this state was the July 5 visit of the most ordinary French Test side in memory.
One game - two if you include the Australia A-Fiji clash at Ballymore.
No code can grow when the total diet of matches is fed from TV.

BOKKE“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White
and also they dont need two super 14 clubs in queensland

is there still talk of an islander scorced side to be based at ballymore? i think thats the best idea for super rugby expantion in australia for the short term

There were several options floating around at the time - some more serious than others. Talk was the Gold Coast if they were gonna go with a Pacific Islands team.
There's been no more talk of it recently as the ARU has closed ranks on the matter (although the media seems to think Melbourne's the favourite) - we were supposed to find out by the end of this month so fingers crossed that they stick to that.
The whole thing's been very clandestine compared to when Perth and Melbourne were bidding a few years ago...![]()
Multiple teams from one state would either mean the state rugby body has to administer two competing teams, or they have to split one or both off as separate entities. The first will inevitably lead to accusations of favouritism and anti-competitive behaviour, the latter would divorce the revenue generated by the professional level from the amateur level it was designed to support. Both outcomes blow - IMO, S14 teams have to be one per state as the primary revenue generator with the next one will in Melbourne.
West Sydney I reckon, pick up the mungo and PI talent that don't associate with the douchey Tahs. NSW have a large talent pool and we all know they know buckleys about identifying talent so it would be ideal for Aussie rugby. Also we would be able to establish a strong base against the future inception of AFL in the region.
I think Gold Coast isn't an option as QLD doesn't have the depth so it would have to rely on a lot of NSW-ites, which wouldn't make sense over a West Sydney team.
Melbourne is a bad idea, I went to the Bledisloe last year, basically all tourists, a select handful of locals at most. AFL is king and they are ruthless. They let the Storm exist as they know they have minimal chance to growth, however if rugby is to be successful in Victoria the AFL will be threatened and saturate the media aka. in WA but by the power of 20.
