SA v Aus: Wallaby player ratings

    Sat, 23 Aug 2008 18:39

Australia not only kept alive their Tri-Nations dreams, and consigned South Africa to another season at the foot of the table, with their 27-15 win over the Springboks in Durban on Saturday, they also set up a decider against the All Blacks in Brisbane on September 13.

It was a great comeback from the Wallabies, after their 10-39 loss to New Zealand in Auckland earlier this month, as they again showed up the Springboks at the breakdown.
But there were other areas where they overpowered South Africa. Full marks to Robbie Deans for his tactical appreciation of the game, good selections and astute coaching.
rugby365's Jan de Koning rates the Wallaby players:
    15 Drew Mitchell:
He was rock steady on defence and always looking for work. Maybe not the world's greatest counter attacking player, but sound allround. 6/10
    14 Peter Hynes:
Very ordinary display for a very talented player and that on a day when the Aussies backs were far superior. 4/10
    13 Stirling Mortlock (captain):
Typical Stirling performance from the Wallaby captain - strong, straight running and great break for his try. 10/10
    12 Berrick Barnes:
Took an early knock and never looked comfortable. Replaced 20th minute. 2/10
    11 Lote Tuqiri:
Good obstructive running and good on him for getting away with it. Poor hands at time, but great running for his try. Still a threat on the attack. 6/10
    10 Matt Giteau:
Tactically he simply outplayed Butch James and showed that brains can beat brawn any day. Those little grubbers had the Boks' defensive line at sixes and sevens all day. 8/10
    9 Sam Cordingley:
Steady and a great service to Giteau. Nothing too flash, but he did what he was paid to do and made no mistakes. 6/10
    8 Wycliff Palu:
Abrasive and strong at the breakdown. He is forming a great partnership with George Smith and Rocky Elsom. Deans has his mix right. 7/10
    7 George Smith:
Several great steals ... as usual, great on defence and allround showed the Bok loose forwards up. Remains a world class poacher. 8/10
    6 Rocky Elsom:
Strong as always and hard-working. He got away with some skullduggery, but his face looked he went 10 rounds with a world heavyweight champion. 7/10
    5 Daniel Vickerman:
A couple of clean line-out takes and hard work around the park till he went off in 35th minute. The Wallabies missed him. 6/10
    4 James Horwill:
He had a quiet day by his standards, but he also did some yeoman work around the park. His injury will also concern the Wallabies. 6/10
    3 Matt Dunning:
Struggled in the scrums and got tackled backwards whenever he tried to run the ball. Remains the most overrated prop in international rugby and was replaced. 2/10
    2 Stephen Moore:
Hard-working and clever at scrums, knowing full well his team is always under pressure. Great use of delaying tactics at scrum time. 6/10
    1 Benn Robinson:
Good try and great vision to see the gap. Ordinary at scrum time, but good workrate. 5/10
    Replacements:
16 Tatafu Polota-Nau (on for Horwill in the 79th minute):
Not long enough to be rated
17 Al Baxter (on for Dunning - 56th minute):
The Aussie scrums were more steady, although his impact elsewhere was not as effective as you would have liked. 5/10
18 Dean Mumm (on for Vickerman in the 35th minute):
He did not back away from a scarp with the Boks and brought a physical edge to the game. 6/10
19 Phil Waugh (on for Palu in 48th minute - just blood - on for Palu 78th minute):
Not enough time on the field to be rated
20 Brett Sheehan (on for Cordingley in the 55th minute):
Steady, rather than spectacular. Did his job and nothing more. 5/10
21 Timana Tahu (on for Hynes 56th minute):
One great run and a fine tackle. Certainly an improvement. 6/10
22 Ryan Cross (on for Barnes in the 20th minute):
Strong on the run and stood up well in the tackle. Looked for work and kept the Bok defenders busy all afternoon. 6/10

My thoughts exactly. I was also interested in his comment that Drew wasn't the best counter attaking runner yet he gave a 6... If Drew has ANYTHING it's counter attack! I thought Drew did well, countered smartly and deserves to be really happy with his kicking game.

Tahu also got a massive wrap for doing pretty much nothing other than getting in the way....then he bagged Dunning for being a little soft, but getting the job done, I thought his comments were probably written before the game and he just touched up the preface to show that they won.

I thought Drew wasn't at his world cup best. He did well in defense and when the balls were bombed down to him, but his counter attack wasn't his usual best. It seemed at times, he struggled to decide whether to run it back or kick it.

I thought Geroge Smith was definitely best on field. He had a perfect game and his turning the ball over was just a game winner.

Brett Sheehan was pretty bad and do not reckon he shld be 3rd in line.

I thought Tahu showed signs of brilliance and good tackling as well. Won't be surprised to see him take over Barnes next week.

Palu and Rocky have been my fav players this year. You know with them hitting the ball up, you'd almost always get over the gain line.

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

I thought Moore had a great game. Lots of good runs, seemed like he had the ball all night.

    Monday Feature: Straight up Stirling
    Mon, 25 Aug 2008 12:19

I know it is always easier sitting on the sideline calling the shots, or as the saying goes: "It's easier to criticise than to create."

However, there is value in stepping back and taking an objective view (if modern journalists can ever be truly objective) and then saying it like it is.

It is with this in mind that I look at how complicated the Springboks make life for themselves and how simple the Wallabies' approach to the game is.

Maybe it does have something to do with coaches - Robbie Deans' simplistic approach to the game as opposed to Peter de Villiers' almost fanciful vision of 'empowering' the players to play an expansive game.

The best example of how easy this game is to play is to look at Wallaby captain Stirling Mortlock. You never see any elaborate passes, fancy footwork or crazy cross-field runs. He takes the ball straight up and hard, making sure he commits defenders.

And, as happened again at the weekend, if you don't bring him down with your first-up tackle, you are in trouble.

    Basic stuff, really.

Player of the Weekend: Stirling Mortlock continues to lead the Wallabies with aplomb. Mortlock, who ironically played his 50th Test against the Springboks in Johannesburg last year, also provided the winning touch the last time Australia beat the Boks in South Africa - that touchline penalty for a 19-18 win in 2000.

Mortlock received his greatest honour when he was asked to captain the Wallabies at the 2007 World Cup in France.

And his true commitment to the Wallaby cause is reflected in the fact that in February he announced that he will continue playing for/in Australia until at least the end of 2010 - knocking back sizable offers from overseas clubs. Australian Rugby Union )ARU) CEO John O'Neill endorsed this decision saying that Mortlock is a "real captain courageous" and an "inspirational leader".

    Brief bio of Stirling Mortlock:
    Position: Centre
    Height: 191cm
    Weight: 100kg
    Date of Birth: 20/5/1977
    Test career:
Test Debut 2000 v Argentina, Brisbane
    Test Caps 66
    Test Points 468
    Super 14:
    Team: Brumbies
    Super 12/14 Points: 904
    Super 12/14: Caps 105

Villain of the Weekend: There were two citings after the game - Bok prop CJ van der Linde for charging into an opponent head first and Wallaby flank Rocky Elsom for pulling Victor Matfield down in a line-out. One action, that of Elsom, is said to have caused an injury. However, my vote goes to Van der Linde's brain explosion, rushing head first into a ruck - which infamously ended his Super Rugby career earlier than anticipated. Van der Linde, who is fronting up to a SANZAR judicial committee, is leaving to go play in Ireland for Leinster after the Tri-Nations. He may well have played his last Test for South Africa. In a touch of irony, Elsom, who also faces up to a SANZAR judicial hearing on Monday, have also signed for Leinster.

Disappointment of the Weekend: Without a doubt scrumhalf Fourie du Preez. He is such a talent and a class act. However, he seems to be suffering from post-World Cup syndrome and is nowhere near the form that made him to top No.9 in the world last year. It may be that he - like so many other Boks - need a more structured game, but this 'freedom' thing doesn't well with the Bok scrumhalf.

Try of the Weekend: It was brilliant in its simplicity, but Stirling Mortlock's 66th minute score killed off the Boks' last, flimsy hopes of salvaging anything from the game. The try came when Victor Matfield knocked on the kick-off. That gave the Wallabies a scrum and they scored from it in the simplest of ways. Mortlock did a scissors with Giteau and ran 27 metres to score under the posts. He cut past Schalk Burger and then Andries Bekker and then Joe van Niekerk and then Luke Watson, who grasped at his chin.

    Quote(s) of the (last) Week:
    1. This well-worn cliche, yet again, comes from the Springbok coach, Peter de Villiers: "One big message that we want to get out there is that we will never go out and lose a game on purpose." Yes Peter, we know the team doesn't lose on purpose. But damn, they can at least try a bit harder, play with a bit more purpose and keep their heads up.
    2. Also De Villiers, also a cliche: "Rome wasn't built in one day, so I would ask that the public still give us some time." At least the new emperors that reigned in Rome didn't try and break down what was build before they arrived. They used the 'successful' foundations that existed and improved upon it.

What if...: Should the Springbok fall to Australia in their return Test in Johannesburg on Saturday, coach Pieter de Villiers's record will drop to an alarming 50 percent success rate (he currently stands at 55.6 percent) - which will see him drop below Jake White (66 percent), Rudolf Straeuli (52 percent), Harry Viljoen (53 percent), Nick Mallett (71 percent) and Andre Markgraaff (61 percent). Only Carel du Plessis' 37 percent is worse in the professional era.

(Stats, courtesy of pickandgo.info - rugby365's official stats partner)

Fact of the Week: Australia have only ever won one Test in Johannesburg - against the Springboks of course - a 11-9 victory in August 1963. They have lost on eight other occasions since 1933.

Noteworthy stats: South Africa had only 44 percent of the possession and 45 percent of the territorial advantage. They also made 17 handling errors, conceded 16 turnovers and missed 14 tackles. Still wondering why they lost?
