Bad as each other
The irony of the settlement of the Sonny Bill Williams affair is after all the vilification of Williams for being a money-hungry mongrel dog, and all the high-principled promises of Canterbury that it was a matter of honour and they would pursue the issue to its legal end, it turned out that Canterbury, too, had their price. A cheque for $750,000 straight into the impoverished Dogs' coffers, to let Sonny go? Yes, please. In the end, the actions of both sides proved the famous dictum uttered by the late Kerry Packer in 1976 when he began negotiations with the Australian Cricket Board over television rights: "Come, come gentlemen, there is a little bit of the whore in all of us: name your price." Meanwhile, the NRL and various commentators still don't get it on Sonny Bill with their ongoing earnest discussions about how long he should be banned from the NRL, and whether he will ever be welcomed back. Gentlemen, he's gorn. He's not coming back
TEAM OF THE WEEK
Sally McLellan. Won a silver in the 100m hurdles and a gold for the charming joy she expressed afterwards.
Anna Meares. Won a silver in the cycling after suffering a devastating injury earlier in the year. As her mother said: "She went from a broken neck to going for broke in eight months."
British Olympic Team. I am told all but a handful of their medals are in events where you sit down - but don't want to check on the strong suspicion it is not true.
plus lots of other great stuff here......
