Rugby is mourning the death of a young winger from NSW club Randwick who was killed in an avalanche while skiing at the weekend.

Tom Carr-Boyd, 22, died when a collapsed segment of hardened snow gave way and caused the avalanche at Blue Lake, about 5km from Charlotte Pass.

From the Blue Mountains town of Wentworth Falls, Carr-Boyd played lower grades with Randwick during the past three seasons; his last game for the Galloping Greens was against Warringah on August 9.

Randwick Rugby Union patron Jeff Sayle said Tom would be sadly missed.

"Everything he did was from the heart on and off the field,” said Sayle.

“He played last week, I can still see him running down the sidelines against Warringah; you never lose memory of those sort of things.

“He will be up there playing in heaven.”

Sayle said Carr-Boyd was a promising footballer and a “great young club man” who played seven matches for the undefeated fourth grade side this season.

“(Tom was) involved in everything, he will be sadly missed," Sayle said.

“It's a shock because you don't expect anything (like this) to happen.”

Tom Carr-Boyd played 28 games in fourth grade and 5 in third grade over three years in the senior ranks with Randwick and scored 18 tries.

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White
