Roe reitires due to career-ending shoulder injury

QUEENSLAND Reds veteran and former Wallaby John Roe has announced his immediate retirement from rugby union, citing a career-ending shoulder injury.

Roe, 31, made the shock announcement to teammates today, telling them his shoulder wouldn't hold up to the rigours of another Super 14 season.

"I'd love nothing more than to be part of this team again next year, but not at the risk of being a passenger for all or part of the season," the former Reds skipper said.

"It's better for everyone if I make the call now."

Roe played 107 matches for Queensland since making his debut in 1999 and also played 19 Tests for the Wallabies.

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

Shame to see players go down to injury. John Roe has been around for a while and very good player, vital for the QRU and ARU. Good luck in life after rugby !

he was a good player but i think his next few years at the Reds would have seen him importance relegated anyway, he was on the bench when Mcmenimen was playing with MMM at 7 and Houston at 8.

He was they type of player whos pysique just limitied his potential, to short and small to be a blindside flanker, to big and slow to be a openside flanker and not big enough to be a number 8.

Good Luck John, (A Dedication Red, thru and thru)

Average age must be high schoolers soon also, with the departure of "old man" cordingley, clinton shifsocke (sorry for spelling) John Roe and Chris Latham, & Rod Blake.. have a look at the experience there (CS experience in the 13 man game)

Who is there left now in the squad who has the s14 experience must be only Barnesy & Digby. The other squad members must only have 100 games combined ? (correct me if i am wrong)

well the thing is that QLD has being in this situation for the past few years, many of the young players coming through already have a fair bit of experience.

    Cooper 22
    *Barnes 34
    *Holmes 34
    Genia 18
    Fetoia 16
    *Ioane 27
    *Hynes 55
    *Horwill 43
    *Turinui 71(if he stays)
    *McMenimen 21
    Lucas 10
    Vaalu 18
    *Hardman 99

    *played wallabies

yes its going to be a massive experience glut, that being said though Latham, Blake and Cordingley didnt start or play in the majority of this seasons matches. Shifcofske was old but not experienced at rugby. The biggest loss will be Moore i think, the rest of the players were towards the end of there careers anyway, Moore apparently had the potential to be a future captain.

i think its a bit of a misconception that many of the players are school age, the backline will extremely young with nearly all early 20's, with Turinui and Hynes being around 25/26 respectively.

but the forwards pack has a average age slightly higher.

If the reds keep there youngesters out the back they will be force (with the force) in the s14 for years to come. The forwards are a bit suspect but as our said TOCC.

Never know Peter Hynes will probably come to the force in 2009 or 10. all the other Reds Wingers have (junior, digby, stapleton, mitchell, JOC, Caleb Brown)

he only just re-signed with the Reds for another 2 or 3 seasons.

Junior was a centre when he was at the Reds, Stapleton, Digby and Joc were never in the Reds, only the junior program.

no i was just pointing out that there is a difference between the Reds and the Junior program.

at the end of the day they were still in the QLD development program and in the case of JOC and Digby would definetly have made the Reds.

you have to understand that because of the large amount of rugby players in QLD that the Reds and Junior development are kept seperate more so then WA.

there two different things, theres the Reds Academy which is only something thats popped up in the last couple of year to seperate it from the QRU Regional Rugby College(by regional they mean Brisbane & Gold Coast) which is what JOC was part of.

You dont have to sign any contracts to be part of the QRU Regional Rugby Contract which is targeted at the best schoolboys in SEQ, whereas the Reds Academy is where the players actually get contracted and train with the Reds, get access to all the facilities coaching staff etc, its usually for players in the 17-21 age group.
