A: 1648 hours of listed sport was shown on free-to-air television last year.

Q: How much sport was shown live on FTA last year?
A: about an hour and a half, in 3 states

Q: What has been the direct result of this legislation on Australians wanting to watch sport?
A: The rights for marquee events (ie Rugby World Cup, Ashes Cricket, International League) have been devalued as Foxtel can't bid. Many events are sold exclusive to FTA, forcing all Australians to watch their coverage which is often delayed by up to 4 hours, butchered by adverts and with sub-standard commentators, or NOT SHOWN AT ALL!

Q: Which events has this legislation caused to be taken off television all together?
A: The 2006 Ashes was sold exclusively to Channel 9, however they decided to show their news and shithouse current affairs crap at 6pm. As a direct result, the last session was not shown in Eastern states for the Perth and Adelaide tests.

Q: What did Australians who wanted to watch these marquee events do?
A: As there was no Foxtel or pub coverage, the only option was to listen to ABC radio who called the game.

The Federal Government is proposing to introduce “use it or lose it” rules for sports on the antisiphoning list to ensure that broadcasters are showing the events they acquire and that listed sports are not being “hoarded”. “Hoarding” occurs when rights to an event are acquired by a free-to-air broadcaster and are not shown or passed on to another broadcaster or pay TV operator. Free TV broadcasters are confident that they show the rights to sport they acquire and everything else is available to pay TV. We are concerned that pay TV interests
want to apply a set of rules that will result in sports that are currently seen on free to air television, being removed from the list even where this will disadvantage viewers.

If I missed any of that series i would have murdered someone.

Getting back towards the topic, it just shows the contempt FTA stations have towards sport they own the rights to. SBS should get involved, they got a winner with the 2005 Ashes, they have the FTA rights for 2009 Ashes as well.

I look forward to the fed's introducing the "use it or lose it" legislation. Will be the best thing for sports viewers and it may force FTA networks to show sports at decent hours

That will take us back to square one then. But maybe the admins of the Sports (eg. ARU, Cricket Australia etc etc) can negotiate with pay tv instead of being forced by law to talk to FTA networks

This legislation is directly affecting the ability of the ARU to retain key players in the country.

Even though they get to show the games now I'm sure Foxtel would be willing to pay heaps more money if they could get "exclusive" rights to the Rugby. This money could then be used to pay the players we are losing to Europe.
