    (Drew) Mitchell gibe stirs Reds

    Mitchell gibe stirs Reds

    April 18, 2008 12:00am Mitchell gibe stirs Reds | The Courier-Mail

DREW Mitchell insists the Western Force will deflate Queensland's grand plans at Suncorp Stadium tonight by repelling their "15 minutes of macho bravado from the kick-off".

It was a belittling shot across the bows of the Reds from their former golden boy who is playing the best and most consistent rugby of his career since shifting to Perth last year.

Reds coach Phil Mooney bit instantly when the words of his former Queensland under-19 protege were dangled as bait in front of him before training late yesterday.

    "Only 15 minutes . . . we'll see about that," Mooney said.

"There's always plenty of spice to these derby games and we'll be adding ours.

"We know the Reds are not going to be spoken of in exalted terms again until we consistently start winning big games like this one.

"We're serious about being the spoilers on teams with a semi-final chance over these last five rounds, starting with the Force."

Mitchell's comment that the Reds would turn on the aggro early to gain the advantage is exactly what most judges expect with an enforcer captain in James Horwill at the helm.

In the corresponding match two years ago, the niggle erupted at the first scrum, with the front rows in a push-off and former teammates Nathan Sharpe and David Croft eyeballing each other from close range.

Horwill copped a yellow card that night for a dangerous high tackle and he must show a mix of controlled fury and calm to inspire a Reds side minus five key Wallabies.

Last year the Force weathered the early Reds fire and stormed home 38-3 in Perth.

Tonight shapes as a fascinating clash worthy of many more than the 20,000 turnout tipped.

Two children are being let in free with every paying adult in a positive promotion.

Both sides have plenty to prove.

Force centre Scott Staniforth put his enterprising team's cause best as it strives to jump ahead from sixth place without the mercurial Matt Giteau.

He said: "We're looking forward to proving we're not a one-man team – Matt Giteau and 14 others."

Far from being cowed by moving into Giteau's boots at flyhalf, replacement Lachlan MacKay spoke with the assurance of the leader he needs to be for his backs tonight.

"All week I've been hearing I can't catch, pass or kick so I'm not feeling any pressure," MacKay said.

The back-row match-ups are full of young gun-old bull duels.

As a Churchie schoolboy, Force colt David Pocock used to watch Croft in action from the Ballymore hill.

Now they will grapple face to face.

Young Brando Va'aulu, in-form Peter Hynes and fullback Clinton Schifcofske, a former Canberra Raider, need to show their stuff in attack for the Reds.

    TIP: Force by 7

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Remember when Mooney, your coach started speaking crap about Lachlan McKay? How is this any different? Because he is the coach he can obviously speak trash right?

i don't believe he did. He simply pointed out the no-brainer that Mckay is not Giteau and would be targeted.

Drew Mitchell on the other hand is a classic example of someone who gets going (as in, leaves) when the going gets tough.

I enjoy the fact that the Force are going well, but look out if that ever changes - Drew will be MIA - I guarantee it.

I think Drew deserves more credit than that.

actually i think you will find it was a nickname he picked up back when he and sailor were at the Reds together. It was in reference to his confidence/ego being equal to sailors.

That's true. Drew has always fancied himself - a bit like Wendell.

Just wondering, have you met Drew?
Sure he might fancy himself but he is playing well. I'd prefer him to have confidence than not and always be second-guessing himself.
