    Tawake signs for Japanese club

    April 01, 2008

BRUMBIES back-rower Jone Tawake has signed a three-year contract with Japanese club, Secom.

The Fijian-born Australia A representative will link with the Japanese second division side at the end of the 2008 Super 14 season.

Tawake says he's excited about the new challenge.

"I've really enjoyed my time at the Brumbies and I wouldn't want to play for another Australian team," he said.

"I'd always thought about playing overseas at some stage and this is a great opportunity for me to experience a different culture and play in Japan.

"I've got a few mates who are playing over there and I'm really looking forward to the experience."

The 25-year-old has played 40 Super rugby matches, including the 2004 Super 12 final for the Brumbies after joining the squad from the Waratahs for the 2004 season.

Tawake will join the Japanese club, currently coached by former Brumbies fly-half Baden Stephenson, in June.

"This is a great opportunity for Jone but he's still got an important role to play with the Brumbies in 2008," Brumbies Coach Laurie Fisher said.

"He's been a very popular member within the side and throughout the broader Brumbies community.

"I think I can speak on behalf of the whole Brumbies family when I say we all wish Jone and his family all the best for this next stage following the Super 14 season."

The Brumbies meanwhile suffered a blow in the lead-up to their weekend match with the Chiefs when hooker Huia Edmonds fractured his right forearm during training.

Edmonds suffered the fracture during a contact session on Monday morning with X-rays confirming he would require surgery and is expected to miss the remainder of the Super 14 season.

The Brumbies will name their side to face the Chiefs on Wednesday.
