    Bennett to lead the Dragons

WAYNE Bennett has signed a three-year contract to coach St George Illawarra in the NRL from next season.

Brisbane's six-time premiership-winning coach reached an agrrement with the club yesterday, and the contract was rubber stamped by the board late last night.

The club is expected to call a press conference later today to make the appointment official.

St George Illawarra will become Bennett's third NRL club after two decades at the Broncos following a short stint with Canberra.

Bennett will replace Nathan Brown, who could still be retained at the club in some capacity on the coaching staff.

Bennett has been set to leave Brisbane for a while now, with Craig Bellamy the hot favourite to replace him.

Just in defence of Browny he has did well last year with a team of kids playing in 1st grade for the 1st time and with what senior players stayed instead of chasing money like Trent Barrett and the rest of them. Browny has been coaching a team that has been gutted of expierience and by injury. I believe the dragons hold the record of most debutantes in one season after last season.

Obviously that doesn't cover his whole stint as head coach.

He learned his trade in 1st grade. He had only coached 1 season in the lower grades. And the blame must surely go to some of the players, who underperformed for so long

im surprised wayne bennett is continuing with his coaching career, then again when you have that kind of experience it is almost invaluable. but i seriously thought he was just going to pull the pin, looks like the broncos are screwed for the rest of the year

Why? They are three from three and on top of the table. Ivan Henjack seems to be taking over the coaching duties already. At least he speaks civilly to the media.

I reckon Bellamy looks good as the long term replacement.

If Bellamy leaves the storm they will be screwed. Half their players have "get out" clauses if Bellamy leaves

I thought that Bellamy still had another couple of years on his contract, which, I presume, would make it difficult for him to make the move to Brisbane in 2009.
Glad to see so many St George supporters here!

Bennett is making the right move because the team can really only get better and he might shake the place up a bit. Blokes like ryles and woolford should have been put back to reserve grade long ago but brown doesn't want to piss his mates off. I think brown would go good in a different enviroment maybe even england.

Thats the thing i didn't like with Browny, he played with alot of the people he was appointed to coach, and even i think at times the friendship may have gotten in the way of seeing the situtation in regards to the form of players etc objectively.

Good Luck for the Future Browny, you will be missed by this Dragons fan, but Wayne Bennett is a pretty good replacement

I think Bellamy is still contracted for another 2 years after this one, but how easy do people get out of a contract these days?? Most contracts have get out clauses anyway.

Like theres any other NRL club worth supporting

Prediction from well connected sauces inside the NRL.

Bellamy takes the Broncos gig, via a get-out clause. Many players leave behind him, including the last standing Western Red. The Storm fail to get any class replacements. They descend to perennial cellar dwellers with no crowds and no income. They are virtually insolvent . A syndicate comprising a wealthy business man, a well known actor and an American Bourbon Distiller buy out the franchise and move it back to Perth as the "new" Western Reds. They are to play at the brand spanking 35,000 seat rugby stadium, which was built under duress when a petition was ignored by the Carpenter Government. This caused 2 years of rioting ouotside Subiaco Oval until the Government backflipped and built the stadium, despite howls of protest from the WAFC and their subsidiary, the West Coast Eagles.
