What's in a Name?

I was chatting about Super14 with some of my non-Rugby mates ( ** shudder ***, yes, I know ), and somehow we got round to talking about the idea being floated about the comp expanding.

I pipe up with "Well, I always thought the actual name was a bit dumb, it was Super12, then when more teams were added it was changed to Super14, so guess it's going to be Super16 or something. You'd think they'd have some sort of generic name like ......" trails off as I note the dropped jaws and startled look on their faces ......

They sputter "But we thought the name meant the number of players on the team, like Rugby 7's!!!".


Cue rofl for me, but it did make me think of the marketing aspects of that misconception, do you think the comp should have something more generic along the lines of AFL or NRL?

It's amazing how many people I have met that thought the same. I think Super 16 will be fine.

They should sell the rights to the name like Heneiken Cup or Guiness Premiership...give me a second to duck before you start throwing the eggs and tomatoes at me.

I know it is already sold off by each union, here it is Investec Super 14 in NZ I think it is Rebel Sport Super 14 and SA has something different again. Not sure how much money this brings in for each Union, but they should look to see if a universal name can get them more money and then divide this by the three nations.
