how on earth could the crusaders not be at the top of the table pre season?
and with their highly successful 11 years leading up to this season, the brumbies have dropped 6 places in five rounds..? thats a bit rough

The rating system uses the same as the IRB World Rankings. If you read the info on how that system works the idea is that the table is supposed to represent which team would win a game at a neutral event.

Considering the Bulls won the Super 14 last year it was reasonable they are at the top to start the year. Also don't forget the Crusaders lost their last game last year and this counted for double points. As for the Brumbies, when so many teams are bunched together it doesn't take long for them to drop. The same would be shown in the world rankings. NZ dominated world rugby for the last few years and were on top, but one bad showing at the world cup and they quickly dropped out of first place.

'Canes have been dodgy all season though, this must only count results in a very simplistic fashion!

It only takes into account the result of the game. There is a slight bonus if you win big (I think 15 or more). But other then that you can play crap all game against a crap team and win by a drop goal after the final siren and it would still be the same as dominating the game and winning by 14 points.

So when the Hurricanes barely beat the Reds at home their ranking still would have gone up. When we lost to the Crusaders, even though they are clearly the number 1 team, our ranking would have gone down.

Yeah well, We'll beat the 'Canes by a cricket score this year, so that'll help. You'd think they'd factor the position of the teams into the calculation (ie beating the top team counts for more than beating the bottom team)......Saders beat Landers they don't do well, Landers beat Saders they lift a few places in the table!

They sort of do this, but it isn't the position of the team that matters, it's the difference in ranking points between the two teams.

So if the Crusaders played the Highlanders there is about 15 points difference, so if Saders won they wouldn't go up much, but if Highlanders won they would go up a few.

Just look at the change in raking points from last week and that will give you an idea of the sort of changes that happen.

Look at the Reds and Lions, going into the week the Reds were ahead of the Lions but the since the Lions were home team they are considered to be two points ahead of where they were. So really they were favourite to win the game. Because it was tied Reds end up getting .122 points and the Lions lose the .122.

Crusaders demolished the Warratahs, but since there was such a big gap between the two teams they didn't change points at all.

I'd be a bit careful about these sort of predictions. The Hurricanes are a solid team and super rugby has a nasty habit of biting you on the bum when you start being cocky. Contrary to what many may think, this competition is reasonably tight from 1 down to 14.

No, it's like IRB rankings...based on a pointing system not as much on the actual results.

Well it's probably only difficult to justify the current Brumbies team jumpin above us based upon Friday's game, Hope we have a similar jump upwards this sunday!
