Super 14: Western Force led the way for Aussie teams

With all the bad press the have been receiving from the eastern states papers it's nice to see Spiro Zavos make the comment in regards last weeks game against the Cheetahs "This was a tremendous and well-played victory to the best Australian side so far in the 2008 Investec Super 14 tournament."

Glad to see Spiros is back to doing what he does best, writing the rugby....I was getting a little worried when he joined the SMH Force beat up in the off season...

I think everyone comes down with a bout of amnesia about the first loss....I don't think it counts....

That's a bit rough.....It's a good line, but a bit rough, Chucky is still pretty green and I wouldn't throw him into everything there is without a backup plan just yet!

There is nothing new in rugby. The double-around which released Giteau for a sizzling try under the posts was an old Randwick ploy used by Mark Ella in a the glory days of Australian back play
    You're kidding us right Spiro?

The 'wrap around' to release the "extra man" into the gap has been around nearly as long as the game itself. It's been used by just about every well-drilled outfit ever since in many different variations.

    Good article apart from that.

I think Spiro was inferring the "Randwickesque" style rather than the discover of such a move - especially when the likes of Mark Ella, Russell Fairfax and David Campese were together. Although you can go back even further with the famous Wallabies such as Ken Catchpole, Col Windon and Cyril Towers molding a backline fantasia strategy that has lasted the test of time. Even modern players like George Gregan, Chris Latham, Morgan Turinui, Chris Whittaker and David Knox can attribute some of their brilliance to being involved with the Galloping Greens!
