    Henjak back in Perth

    Henjak back in Perth
    17th February 2008, 14:45 WST

Under-fire Western Force halfback Matt Henjak has returned to Perth from South Africa to attend a tribunal hearing into his alleged involvement in a fight which left team-mate Haig Sare with a broken jaw.

Henjak played in the Force’s 17-10 Super 14 loss to the Sharks in Durban yesterday, the first of three matches the Perth-based franchise will play on its South Africa tour.

He will front a serious misconduct tribunal hearing at 4pm Perth time on Tuesday to answer allegations his actions contributed to the injury to Force back Sare.

“The lawyer representing Matt Henjak had requested that the tribunal hearing be further adjourned until the team returns from South Africa to allow Henjak to attend the hearing in person and not by way of video or telephone link-up,” a statement from the Force read.

“The chairman of the tribunal would not agree to the request, and, as a consequence of this, the RugbyWA Board resolved that Henjak return to Perth immediately so that he may attend the tribunal hearing in person.”

Henjak has been involved in number of off-field incidents throughout his career and became the first Wallaby in 40 years to be sent home from a tour - also in South Africa - in 2005.

Meanwhile, RugbyWA has sought to hose down speculation they are in the market for another halfback in order to replace Henjak.

“Adam Clarke, a back up halfback to Henjak, sustained a season-ending neck injury in early January and a process to secure a replacement was commenced some time ago,” the statement read.

“The ARU has been assisting in this process.”

IMHO here is what I believe should happen to Henjak.

If it is proven he started the fight then sack him. No question.

If it is proven that he was retaliating then he should receive a substantial fine and a minimum of a 6 week ban. In addition, he should have to agree while playing for the Force, i.e. on contract to us, he will not let alcohol pass his lips. He should volunteer this to show his commitment to the club. Oh and add a public apology to that, not the Ben kind, a genuine one!

Even with his past history, I don't believe he should be sacked for retaliating, but should sure as hell get punished for putting himself in such a position.

Why ban him from playing?? That will only make it hard on the team.

How about make him play and dock his match payments. That way he is basically working for free. It would hit him in the pocket and he still has to take the bruises of each game.
If he agreed to this it would show how keen he is to work on his "problem".

I feel it would help him gain some respect back as well.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Because if we do any less the ARU will start pissing and moaning that we let him off scott free. I don't have a problem with a ban if he retaliated (unless the broken jaw came from 'misadventure' Burgs' washbasin, or the tiled floor and Jak was found to have just pushed him away)......But certainly the counseling/rehab/whatever the hell will make the 'incidents' stop!

Six weeks is a bit tough if the guy went out for a couple of quiet drinks, got slagged off by Haig....told him to piss off and calm down and then got jumped in the dunnies isn't it? (not saying that's what happened, but it's not impossible is it?)

Isn't this the crux of the matter - having met him - he's dynamic, bright and articulate - having watched him play - he is brave, fearless and intelligent - why does he keep getting into these silly situations - he's 26 - if it is just Alcohol then you go to AA that's it - can't keep having your life messed up because of grog

I would rather he stayed - but not if he's going to disable half the team in the process

GIGS20, the ARU are going to piss and moan no matter what the outcome. It's Henjak now, it'll be something or someone else later. It will never end, especially with the current ARU management (was going to write "leadership", but thought the better of it).
Not knowing any of the details of the whole incident, I don't have any opinion on what sort of punishment, if any, will be appropriate.
