Western Force shape as also-rans, say bookies

    29th January 2008, 8:00 WST West Australian

No team climbed the Super 14 ladder faster last year than the Western Force but the Perth club still can’t find favour with bookmakers around the world.

Australian and English betting agencies have the Force sliding two places to ninth this year, despite them leaping from 14th in 2006 to seventh in 2007 and retaining most of the team responsible for the rise.

Ladbrokes of England and Australia’s Centrebet have the Force on the ninth line at $33 and $34.

Both have installed the Crusaders as favourites, but they differ on the composition of the semifinals.

Ladbrokes opts for the Bulls, Blues and Sharks or Hurricanes to reach the business end of the season and Centrebet favours the Blues, Waratahs and Bulls or Chiefs.

The Bulls beat the Sharks in last year’s final.

Both bookies have the Highlanders and Lions disputing ownership of the wooden spoon.

    • NSW stars Rocky Elsom, 24, and Wycliff Palu, 25, may be lost to the riches of European clubs at the end of 2008. The pair come off contract this year. The ARU have reportedly told Elsom to look overseas if he wants an improved contract as the governing body tightens player salaries.

    SUPER 14 MARKETS

    Ladbrokes: Crusaders $2.50, Bulls $3.50, Blues $3.50, Hurricanes $9, Sharks $9, Chiefs $10, Waratahs $12, Brumbies $20, Force $33, Cheetahs $40, Stormers $50, Highlanders $100, Lions $100, Reds $100.

    Centrebet: Crusaders $3.50, Blues $4.50, Waratahs $6, Bulls $9, Chiefs $9, Sharks $11, Hurricanes $13, Brumbies $23, Force $34, Reds $51, Stormers $51, Cheetahs $67, Lions $201, Highlanders $201.

I think Dave has been having a peek in here and our wonderings as to why the are at 33/1.

One of the greatest guides to Super 14 form is the last 3 weeks games. And I will give you a quick rundown on our opponents 3 weeks prior to meeting us.

    Week 1 v Sharks

Opening game of season but in first week of 3 weeks South African tour and as showed in 2007 that is not a daunting task for us.

    Week 2 v Cheetahs

Cheetahs coming off a home game against the Lions

    Week 3 v Lions

Lions coming off from a home game against the Auckland Blues and away to Cheetahs the previous week.

    Week 4 v Crusaders

Crusaders will be coming into the game after a home game v the Brumbies and a 2 week tour of South Africa

    Week 5 v Blues

Home game for the Blues but they will have just come back from a 3 week tour of South Africa

    Week 6 v Highlanders

Home game for the Highlanders after a bye put the previous 3 weeks in South Africa

    Week 7 v Stormers

Stormers are on their way home to South Africa after a 3 week tour of NZ and Aus

    Week 8 v Bulls

Bulls are on their way home after a 3 week tour of NZ and Aus

    Week 9 v Waratahs

Powdery blues coming off 2 home games but the latest against the Blues

    Week 10 v Reds

Reds will be coming off the bye and 3 weeks in South Africa

    Week 11 bye

    Week 12 : v Chiefs

Chiefs coming off the bye then 2 home games but on their way to South Africa

    Week 13 v Hurricanes

in Wellington the Hurricanes will have had a home game the prior week but a 3 week trip in South Africa before that

    Week 14 v Brumbies

Brumbies will be coming home from 2 weeks in South Africa

Centrebet have the force at $6.50 for top 4.

Other bets they have are: Force - highest Australian team $7
    Force - 5 wins or less $2.30
    - 6 wins $3.40
    - 7 or more wins $2.65

They have us at $23 for the wooden spoon

week 4 and 5 at home against Canterbury and the Blues. Nail these at home and then it could be interesting, especially if we come back from SA with a win or two.

Centerbet are shite for odds. Only punting value is here! Eh Gerry
