"season ending" coach.......I don't know whether this is just spin, but it'll be a real shame to have done all the work of getting him signed and over here, only to see him not take the field once.

Possibly exaggerating things a tad, in order to open the door to negotiations in case things go pear shaped tomorrow night!

This link will be lost in a weeks time - here's the story: Poor Bugger

However, soon after arriving in Perth, Clarke developed a neck problem after he fell awkwardly with Force No 8 Scott Fava during a grappling session with NRL club Melbourne Storm.

Clarke continued training but became concerned when he constantly got pins and needles in his legs during the weeks after the incident.

He had an MRI scan last month and the former Southlander was quickly left contemplating his future as a result of the findings.

"I went into the room to see the doctor and I was bouncing around thinking nothing was wrong and then the doctor said 'there's something wrong here, I don't think you should play rugby again'. It's fair to say the eyes went a bit watery," Clarke said from Perth yesterday.

Clarke had a popped C3 disc in his neck, which was pressing on his spine.

The doctors feared any sudden impact to his neck could see him restricted to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

He underwent surgery on Tuesday last week, when a metal plate was inserted into his spine through his throat.

Doctors told Clarke the surgery may allow him to play rugby again in the future but a decision would be made after six months of rehabilitation.

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

He is in NZ playing Club Rugby in the Northland Club competition for Mid-Western, the same club team as Lachie Munro the former Auckland fly-half. He is aiming to crack the Northland Air NZ Cup team from what I have heard. Our current Super 14 players are Justin Collins, Rene Ranger (Blues) and Jared Payne, Bronson Murray (Crusaders). Fetu'u Vainikolo played for us last year but has since signed for Otago.

He might face a battle to make the squad as we have a couple of other handy halfbacks already contracted. I watched him play a few weeks ago and he looked quite classy. He seemed to have an alright pass and was a very good tackler...sound about right??
