Wallabies branded 'crap'

November 04, 2007 ENGLAND hooker Mark Regan says Australia were"crap" at the Rugby World Cup, and has labelled Matt Dunning and the Wallabies front row the "Teletubbies".

Speaking at a Hong Kong Sevens lunch, 35-year-old Regan said dumping Australia from the World Cup in the quarter-finals had been sweeter than beating France at home in the semis.

“They were absolutely crap,” Regan was quoted saying by Hong Kong's Sunday Morning Post.

“They didn't have a front row to talk about. I believe the Australian Rugby Union wants a new rule change - to do away with the scrum.

“Beating the Aussies was my best moment. Beating the French came in a close second.”

The report said Regan, who came out of retirement this year, labelled the Wallabies front row “the Teletubbies”, a reference to the pot-bellied children's television characters.

He also claimed Australia “had had it easy in their group.”

Regan also hit back at teammate Lawrence Dallaglio's attack on coach Brian Ashton, which he dismissed as a marketing ploy to sell his new autobiography.

“To say that we were like a pub team, and accuse Brian of not having the skills for the job is rubbish,” Regan was quoted as saying.

“It was just a gimmick by Dallaglio to sell his new book.”

England were thrashed 36-0 by South Africa in the pool stage of the World Cup before reaching the final, where they were beaten 15-6 by the Springboks.

The aussies lost because they didnt commit players to the breakdown. that one reason is why they lost.

Spot on Zim re the breakdown, though Regan is old school, he is right about our forwards.
We are shite, but the loosies didnt turn up game night. Dont blame the tight 5

I'm happy to admit we aren't so good scrum wise but its rich of Regan to criticize our front row when the entire English backline was just as big a joke. With the kind of pressure and forward dominance England had over Australia you should have expect at least a try if not 3 or 4. He is right about Lawrence at least.

I'm with ZIM, we lost it at the breakdown. The scrum was ok against all teams, including the Poms, the line-outs were OK, and the back line tried to move the ball when opportunities arose.
Most of the criticism coming from England supporters is probably because they have no practice at looking for 'What England Did Right' - they are so used to looking for negatives as the answer.

I'd have said our line-outs were better than ok. You must have seen those scrums hopep- Guy Sheps was hurting and so was the Tubby. We were lucky to get 2 early penalties but the rest of it was practically a penalty for them for each of their put ins and very bad quality ball for us when we put in (if not a turnover).
