Photo Scanner

Have a shit-tonne of family photos that ideally would get digitised.
Talking over 1,000.
Am aware there are options out there, wondering on experiences and recommendations for mass scanning technology?

I have an overhead scanner which I got for documents and books, but will be using it for photos this coming week and will let you know how it goes. It is fast, but not sure of photo quality yet.

I had a Canon pixma (still do just don't know where it is) and the scan quality was good but it wasn't ideal for doing mass scanning.

Gave it a test this morning, Awesome for speed, but not so great for quality. I think flatbed with a lid is way to go, which will be slow, or a dedicated photo scanner - but they are pricey.

If you have a newish smart phone with a camera you can use that, much quicker than scanning.

That would imply scanning onto phone and then needing to convert to storage?
Am hoping/aiming to be able to scan direct to storage and then sort individual photos into files.
Photos go back to about 1920!

Wouldn't use a flatbed. My folks got one of those slide/photo/negative scanners, and don't recall it being super expensive (although a while ago now). Seemed to do a reasonable job.

That said, a good camera and lighting might well do as well these days.

I’ve got something like that but it’s now probably 12-15 years old but scanned negatives, slides and photos.
Will have a look around as it’s now null and void as I’ve uploaded (if that’s the right word) all our old stuff. I just don’t know how to find it some freaking cloud!

Yes mate.

After taking photos with your iPhone you then connect your phones charge cable to a computer. Your computer will the ask if you wish to copy the pics to it. Once complete you can delete the pics from your phone and start again. The pics will be stored on your computer, you can leave them there, store them in the cloud or OneDrive or copy to an external drive. Yes have done that previously, just hoping there may be a less cumbersome way given so many photos that just feeds photos into a "chute" and file comes up on computer.
A good back up plan though thanks.
