Reds take on demons in Pretoria

Reds take on demons in Pretoria

    Bret Harris | February 09, 2009

    Article from: The Australian

THE Queensland Reds will return to the scene of their most humiliating defeat when they trek to Pretoria to play the Bulls on the South African high veldt.

In the last game of their disastrous 2007 Super 14 season under Eddie Jones, the Reds capitulated to the Bulls 92-3 in Pretoria.

Under new coach Phil Mooney, the Reds avenged that loss last year with a 40-8 win against the Bulls in Brisbane.

Mooney said the debacle in Pretoria two years ago underlined the team's woeful away record in recent years and it is an issue they will address when they meet the Bulls again in the South African capital on Saturday.

"They took their cricket gear with them last time," Mooney said. "I'm not scarred. I wasn't there.

"But the Reds have to address their away record regardless of who we are playing.
"The Waratahs, the Brumbies and the Force play well away. That's the next stage of our development. We need to step up."

The Reds depart this morning with Mooney still mulling over a couple of positions.
Ben Lucas entered the pre-season as the Reds' No1 halfback, but he is facing a strong challenge from Will Genia.

There are only five survivors from the Bulls humiliation in the Reds current squad; Berrick Barnes, Quade Cooper, Sean Hardman, Peter Hynes and Brando Va'aulu.

Some nasty emotional scars to overcome there. The Bulls are a frightening prospect at home if they get off to a good start. Word is they might not be as good as previous seasons.

    Bulls by 20

How about some running rugby from the attack coach?

well not really, considering there is only 5 members who were in the side back in that loss, most of whom have gone on to higher honors and developed considerably. On top of that, most of the current squad's only experience against the Bulls was the 40point flogging in Brisbane last year.

Im not saying its a not daunting prospect, but considering some of the points i posted about i dont think emotional scars is much of a issue.

As they hit the field, the legend will create the fear. QLD is like a pen full of lambs awaiting their throats to be cut. Kinda sad, kinda empty...........and not too pretty

'98 - '02 were good for the Reds up against the Bulls - maybe last years win is the start of another winning streak?

It was actually a metaphor for the disastrous start to the season for the reds. The dishevelled shell of a team huddled under its own posts resembling the blood spattered twitching carcase of an exanguinated lamb.........or the mentally traumatised and bloodied group from the scene of a train smash.

Is that the same dishevelled shell of a team that defeated the Force last week?

Careful now Chisel, the season hasn't yet started.

well i peronally dont think that the word 'dishevelled' fits your explanation in the context, but regardless this same team which carries such impetuous mental demons as you suggest, also beat the Western Force in 2008, as well as a flogging of the Bulls.

But hey chisel, your never one to let facts get in the way of a good uncultivated rant

Anyway, your predictions are about as useful as the one you predicted last week of the Force beating the Reds in the trial

    Reds will win by 6.

Am I the only person who thinks that the Bulls will fully suck this year like they did last year?

Sorry Genius, let me help you with the definition and context

    di⋅shev⋅el
/dɪˈʃɛvəl/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [di-shev-uhl] Show IPA Pronunciation
–verb (used with object), -eled, -el⋅ing or (especially British) -elled, -el⋅ling.
    1. to let down, as hair, or wear or let hang in loose disorder, as clothing.
    2. untidiness and disarray in: The wind disheveled the papers on the desk.

Imagine a group of pale faced exhausted Queenslanders in disarray under their posts watching the bulls lining up another conversion whilst the rest of the team flips a coin back at halfway to see who scores nect......like the last time the Reds went to Pretoria. They need to get a little bit more passionate like the mungoes and yell out QUUUUUUUUUUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENSLAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAANDERRRRRR. It's be great to see them head butting the posts as well
