Eden Park to stage World Cup final

    February 22, 2008

THE 2011 Rugby World Cup semi-finals and final will all be played at Eden Park in Auckland, with organisers citing "logistical" and "financial" considerations for the decision to ignore Christchurch and Wellington.

Organisers are expecting to lose at least $NZ30 million ($26.11 million) in staging the tournament, and with ticket sales the only source of revenue to offset the anticipated running costs of $NZ310 million - the superior capacity of Eden Park outweighed the claims of Wellington and Christchurch.

Eden Park will seat 62,000 spectators once the stadium has undergone a $NZ190 million refurbishment, about 17,000 more than AMI Stadium, once the Christchurch venue has been redeveloped, and about 20,000 more than Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

The additional revenue from those extra seats, coupled with the logistical challenges of moving 30,000 people around the country in the space of a day, made Eden Park the "obvious venue", Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd chief executive Martin Snedden said.

"Once you get further into project and you realise some of the logistical and financial challenges, it becomes pretty clear that as long as the redevelopment of Eden Park goes ahead on time, it's the obvious venue to host both the final and the semi-finals."

The semi-finals would be played on consecutive days, with approximately 35,000 overseas fans holding tickets to both matches, Snedden said.

"We've been through the logistical exercise," he said. "You just can't possibly shift that number of people around and be sure they'd make it.

"The risk is too high and you just can't take risks in this type of project."

There will be 62,000 at the final, none of them supporting the all blacks.

How can they expect to loose so much money?

Because they have to invent electricity and running water? Build an acual airport that has a real terminal and runway and not just some farmers paddock?
    Upgrade the horse and cart?

    That is for two reasons
    a) choke
    b) there aren't 62,000 kiwis left in Auckland they live in Brisbanne now.

They shouldn't need to invent electricity or running water.

Electricity is already "invented" as you say in most other countries which have moved on from steam powered cars and shearing equipment!

Running Water - that's actually pretty easy to get, nature does most of the work for you, in fact .. if you stand somewhere next to running water and ponder "how does this work" and can't figure it out then I highly doubt you are qualified enough to host a rugby world cup!

Building airports is easy enough too - you can outsource that task to the highest bidder, with the NZ$ running only slightly ahead of the Zimbabwian$ you'd probably need to "barter" goods and services as payment!

And as for the Horse and Cart - New Zealand have always said they don't like nuclear power, electricity or running water, and the humble horse gives them carbon credits for which they can trade for equipment to get things they don't have, multiple world cups for example!

organisers expect to loose NZ$30!!! how do they arrive at that figure? surely there are more sources of revenue apart from ticket sales? with both semis played on consecutive days its gonna be a nightmare for accomodation...

But the Union gets nothing from that, but sure the country will - that is why the losses have been underwritten by the Government. But the NZRU will effectively be doing the RWC for cost.
