A drunk man riding a motorbike with no helmet, no lights and a flat tyre has done wheelies while travelling the wrong way up a major Darwin road while being pursued by police. (Now there is a sentence you wouldn't expect to read!)

Police arrested an 18-year-old man after the chase along the Stuart Highway around the Berrimah and Pinelands area about 6.30pm yesterday.

"We were advised by a member of the public that a man was riding a motorbike along the Stuart Highway with a flat tyre, not wearing a helmet and there were no lights on the motorbike," Duty Superintendent Rob Farmer said.

"A police vehicle was in the area and they sighted the motorbike but the rider refused to stop."

Police began to pursue the rider, who was travelling up to 70 kmh.

"He was deliberately swerving back and forth across the lanes and also trying to perform wheel stands with a police car behind him."

Officers kept traffic behind them to prevent other drivers trying to overtake the swerving rider.

"He [eventually] crossed over the median strip and decided he was going to travel inbound on the outbound lane of the Stuart Highway - so against the flow of traffic.

Because of the danger that posed, police put a halt to their pursuit.

"However, he wasn't happy with that," Superintendent Rob Farmer said.

"A short time later he executed a U-turn and came back towards us."

The rider turned off the highway and did another U-turn but then fell off his bike.

"He ended up dropping the bike and we arrested him as he was trying to restart it."

He said the rider returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.149 per cent.
