As Deegan has signed for the Rabble now too, I’m not sure where that leaves Iona. Not even warming the bench I wouldn’t think. I feel sorry for him but then again, if you sign up with that lot, you should expect to be shafted one way or another.

Deegan will, unfortunately, have to confront the virus that affects anybody who goes to the rabble. I haven't seen one who has avoided turning into a mindless drone who doesn't seem to care about team, results or the game, they all appear to simply go through the motions and expect results to come.

With the first full season of GRR in 2020 I would think that the squad is likely to be expanded beyond this years' 31.

Currently the list doesn't include Stander, Thrush and Strachan.

The current list is heavily weighted towards Forwards.

We need a lot more Backs.

Three regular members of the Force’s victorious 2019 NRC squad have signed on to continue their careers in the West.

Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Pama Fou will join young speedsters Byron Ralston and Jake Strachan in turbocharging the Force backline heading into the inaugural Global Rapid Rugby competition.

With Byrno "the Rhino" signed that takes us to 29 signed.

The Samoan Squad that was recently announced had 40 signings, so I am not sure where the limits if any are for a GRR squad.

I think they're going to fine tune the squad of 40, with maybe 30-32 getting contracts, the rest to be the wider squad as needed for cover as the season progresses.

I remember reading somewhere that there's no salary cap, thus implying no limit on team size.

but that's just speculation, I think the squad will be roughly the same size as last year.

I dont think Squad Sizes, are regulated as for some of the teams ie fiji and samoa they are supporting national pathway so their unions may want to develop certain player for certain amount of time.
IMO squuad sizes only really become important once teams start bidding against each other for talent and reducing salary costs on the clubs becomes important.

    From the Samoa Observer:

... the Union are really excited about that pathway, and how it will help players become professional sportsmen off the field as well. Those selected to the final Manumā squad will receive full-time six month contracts.

Between those payments and the logistical requirements, running the team will be an expensive endeavour. Faleomavaega said it will be a jointly funded by S.R.U. and Global Rapid Rugby:

“It’s an additional ask on the Union but it’s something we have to do, it’s an opportunity we can’t afford to let go.”

They are also seeking commercial help from a major sponsor from overseas, the kind S.R.U. have been unable to attract in recent years.

... Another thing that could draw in sponsorships is star signings.

“SRU is obligated under the agreement to provide a couple of marquee players, so we’re looking at that at the moment,” Faleomavaega said, noting those will be players who play or have the intention of playing for Samoa internationally.

    So
    • Samoa Rugby are funding Manuma, along with GRR
    • They want sponsors to help defray costs
    • Will be choosing a final squad (i.e. it's not final yet)
    • Full-time contracts for players chosen. I take this to mean these guys are pro. Not necessarily on massive bucks but enough to train/play full time.
    • Samoa also need to get a few marquee contract stars

I think it is important the cost of living in Samoa and that it is likely that the on island players salarys may not be that high (and the salary component for those members of the team may not be that high when compared to a HK or Perth team), look at the PNG hunters for example, this is where the international sponsor becomes so Important.

But either way this is a great development, if anyone watched the NZTV documentary about samoa rugby and the player drain they have been screaming for a locally proffesional team so those players who want to play and get paid do not need to leave the island.
