Dual international Sonny Bill Williams has confirmed a one-season deal with the Sydney Roosters for 2013 but admits coming back to the NRL wouldn't have been his first choice.
Rugby League's worst-kept secret finally became official on Tuesday, with Williams admitting he only left rugby union because of a handshake agreement he made with Roosters Chairman Nick Politis three years ago.
Williams said the decision was "tough" but he would be looking at the season with a "glass half full" attitude.
The 27-year-old said he'd grown to love rugby union after winning the Super Rugby championship this year with the Chiefs and the Rugby World Cup with the All Blacks in 2011.
Williams said returning to league after a five-year absence would be a "huge challenge."
His contract has yet to be ratified by the NRL but the Roosters expected that to be just a formality.

Fair play to him for honouring the agreement. Too many would have tried to weasel out of it.

Chuck Norris has the greatest Poker-Face of all time. He won the 1983 World Series of Poker, despite holding only a Joker, a Get out of Jail Free Monopoly card, a 2 of clubs, 7 of spades and a green #4 card from the game Uno.
"because of a handshake agreement" and the offer of $1 million!
SBW would sell his mother if the price was right
What a coup, signing a guy who has already said he'd rather be doing something more interesting...
So he'll honour a handshake agreement after walking out on a signed contract? It sounds like he doesn't want to be there anyway![]()
Don't take this as defending SBW - it's not. He was very young when the Bulldogs managed somehow to convince him ti sign a FIVE year contract at way beneath what he turned out to be worth. I'm a lifelong Dogs supporter and at the time I suspected all was not as it seemed - think I may have even posted that here. I've given him the benefit of the doubt ever since. Everyone who doesn't know the facts should do the same.
