2022 Practice Match Force v Reds. Geraldton WA 4th Feb 2022

This is not a new announcement, I am sure that all of you have heard something about this. and all credit should go to Tom Gorman for all of his hard work in the Geraldton Region by bringing school Rugby and the Western Force to the masses.

    Here are the details.

Friday 4th February. 2 Matches at the home of Railways AFL Club. "The Rec" The Recreation Oval. Corner of Augustus and Francis Street. With the lead-up match being 2 Perth Based Clubs and the main match Western Force vs Queensland Reds with kick-off at 5 pm.

Saturday 5th February will see Junior Clinics and Junior matches throughout the day.

I would love to be able to come to this event. Geraldton is the town where I grew up. But with the WA Border the way it is. I don't like my chances.

Word on the mean streets of Applecross said Palmyra may be one of the Perth clubs involved.

But I had to flee before I was roughed up for my ASX passwords

Thinking about it - saw an article a couple of weeks back saying the fixture might be in jeopardy because of the border situation so might wait a bit longer before committing to the drive up.

I really want to go - but getting into WA is really tough atm. And the current information I have is that WA Border won't open until the start of February. Its difficult to rely on that information.

    I grew up in Geraldton.

3 times I have wanted to come to WA in the last 2 years.. 2 times for Funerals. 2 Uncles passed away, and I wanted to come to Perth for the Bledisloe.

Hopefully the new variant they’ve detected this week doesn’t send the entire globe back to square one.

Australia will re-open just in time for the rest of the world to shut down again.

Great to see the City of Geraldton really getting behind the event

City of Greater Geraldton pledges more funds towards Western Force & Queensland Reds match slated for February

The Mid West has taken a big step towards hosting an international-level rugby union match between Queensland and WA next year, with the City of Greater Gerald-ton committing funds to the project.

Councillors voted last Tuesday to provide funding to help schedule a local pre-season match between the Western Force and Queens-land Reds Super Rugby Pacific sides.

The City will allocate $7000 of in-kind funds — consisting of things such as preparing the field for the game — and $5000 from the Mayor’s Discretionary Fund to the plan by the Geraldton Junior Rugby Association to hold the match in February.

Deputy Mayor Jerry Clune said international-level sports events would always be welcome and the plan was a chance for rugby to grow locally.

“Rugby’s not huge in town, but it’s going to give it great exposure and if we can attract those international players to come and play here it’s going to be fantastic, provided we don’t hit COVID-19 restrictions,” Cr Clune said.

“International-level sports in Geraldton is going to be a good thing.”

The association has also secured $5000 through a community grant.

The City said the planned match would be part of a rugby union festival.

“By supporting (the festival), the City would be facilitating the attraction of a national-level rugby union match, an opportunity for the players to mingle with students from local schools, and providing another sporting option for locals to participate in,” a spokesperson said.

The Western Force have provided field requirements and preliminary testing will be done at the Rec ground to check what would need to be done in order to hold the match there.
