Match of the Round: Palmyra v Nedlands at Tompkins Park, Alfred Cove
Two first round winners, Nedlands and Palmyra, will go head to head in the Match of the Round as they stake their claims for an early upper hand in the Pindan Premier Grade on Saturday.
Nedlands come off a five-point win over reigning premiers, Associates, while Palmyra grabbed a stoppage time victory over the newly-located Wests Scarborough in Round One.
The last time the teams met Palmyra walked away from The Foreshore with the points, defeating the minor premiers, 34-27.
Nedlands welcome back Emirates Western Force squad member Locky McCaffrey to the rear of the scrum along with the promotion of Davis Tavitta from the bench to flyhalf, while Pally will look to the same XV that accounted for Wests Scarborough last week to get the job done against last year’s minor premiers.
Nedlands coach Tony Ball expects the scrum and lineout to have a strong bearing on the match.
“Their set piece was really good; the front row in particular is incredibly strong, so if we can quash that and come out 50/50 at scrum and lineout time hopefully our backline will be able to get on top,” he said.
“They also have a really strong openside flanker in Sean Stapleton so we have to try and nullify his influence at the breakdown.”
Palmyra boss Dave Ball expects the addition of McCaffrey to strengthen an already potent back row.
“Locky McCaffrey is going to be a huge threat to us, he loves to carry and he works hard to get in to those wider channels,” he said.
“They’ve got a good back row anyway and they are particularly strong in the centres as well. You know exactly what you’re going to get and this is definitely going to be a very tough and competitive contest.”

Perth Bayswater v Kalamunda at Pat O’Hara Reserve, Morley
Strong off-season recruiting looks to have Kalamunda on the right track after the Bulls cruised past Rockingham – 36-7 – in last weekend’s opening fixture.
After finishing at the wrong end of the ladder last season, both teams will have an opportunity to build some valuable momentum, with two wins on the trot in store for the winner.
The clubs haven’t met since the halfway mark of last season, when Perth Bayswater claimed a five-point win.
Kalamunda will be eager to balance the ledger having lost both encounters in 2012.

Rockingham v UWA at Lark Hill Sports Complex, Rockingham
After being humbled to the tune of 45 points by a powerful Cottesloe outfit in Round One, the Students will be looking to bounce back with a strong performance against Rockingham.
Coach Steve McFarland has reacted with five changes to the starting XV, including two new front rowers in Elliot Dhrury and Jacob Gionoli. Luke Burton is unavailable due to his inclusion in the Australian Under 20’s selection camp in Canberra, allowing Levon Kwas-Rothwell to start at flyhalf.
Rockingham started the 2013 season in similar vein to UWA with a 29-point loss to last year’s closest contemporary, Kalamunda.
UWA accounted for Rockingham in both of the clashes last season and will be hoping last week was an aberration as it attempts to open its account for 2013.

Wanneroo v Cottesloe at Kingsway Reserve, Lansdale.
The Gulls will fly into Round Two full of confidence after routing the team it played in last season’s minor semi-final, UWA, by 45 points on Sunday.

Both matches between the sides last season were fiercely competitive, with Cottesloe winning both games by an aggregate of just seven points.

Newly-located Wests Scarborough faces another tough road trip, taking on reigning premiers, Associates, at home for the first time this season.
Wests have stuck with the same team that lost to Palmyra by two points last week, when a stoppage time penalty goal allowed Pally to steal the win.
Both teams will feel they had opportunities to win their respective Round One fixtures, however, by the end of the weekend one side will be still be chasing their first win.
