BRISBANE captain Darren Lockyer has been forced to deny rumours of an imminent switch to Super League after the chairman of English side Huddersfield declared he was ready to make the biggest announcement in the club's modern-day history.
The Giants' Ken Davy attracted the attention of newspapers when he threw open the gates for Saturday night's game against Catalan Dragons and promised an announcement of seismic proportions.
Lockyer, off contract with Brisbane at the end of next year, was bandied about as a potential signing for 2010, given that on Monday he ruled out a switch to rugby union and pledged to finish his career in league.
Although not regarded as one of the powerful clubs in England, Huddersfield has recruited strongly for next season, having signed Wests Tigers fullback Brett Hodgson to play under incoming coach Nathan Brown.
Lockyer's signature, albeit for 2010, would have trumped that. It would have also signalled a significant coup for Huddersfield, the town where rugby league was founded in 1895. Adding fuel to the rumours was the relationship between Hodgson, Brown and Lockyer -- all are managed by same man, SFX Sports' George Mimis.
However, Mimis yesterday dismissed the speculation, saying he and Lockyer were yet to decide what he would do when his contract came to an end next season
