Thankyou to those who fought and those who died for our country, our freedom and those who could not defend themselves!
Lest we forget!

Chuck Norris has the greatest Poker-Face of all time. He won the 1983 World Series of Poker, despite holding only a Joker, a Get out of Jail Free Monopoly card, a 2 of clubs, 7 of spades and a green #4 card from the game Uno.
They shall not grow old, As we that are left grow
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condem
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them
Lest We Forget
oh and if you see people in the city or wherever you may be "selling" little plastic poppies today/collecting for the RSL, give generously![]()

It's Veterans Day here tomorrow too. When I think of those who served our country I think of WWII mostly because that was my parents generation. My Father was in the South Pacific and I had many Uncles and an Aunt who were in Europe and the Pacific. For years I heard many stories about the war and what was going on at home at the time. Flags were flown on your house with pride, parades and ceromonies meant something to everyone. It's sad that over the last 15 years or so most of that generation has passed. They had a love for the country and their fellow citizens like we'll probably never see again. Thank you and God Bless all those who served and all those who supported them at home.
My great grand father worked as a vehicle inspector and was sent to assess the situation in France shortly before Dunkerque where he was evacuated on a small boat with the troops. He joined up and was sent to Africa where he fought Rommel, he then was selected to be trained as a commando where he raided islands in the north sea and some small skirmishes in France before his unit got wiped out all apart from himself and a few others (200 died). He fought in every theatre, Italy, France, Africa and the Pacific and India against absurd odds. Never as much got a scratch apart from temporary sand blindness in Africa which lasted about a week. After the war finished and he got his old job back at the ministry of transport and in his first week had a heart attack and died. Hows that for irony no Jap, German of Italian could hurt him but working for the government finished him off.

I proudly remember them....
Proudly bought to you by a brewery somewhere....
Among the hundreds of graves in Turkey, these two inscriptions really stood out to me. Be it Anzac Day, Rememberance Day or any other time I find myself thinking about the sacrifice of our troops, I invariably think of these two blokes, the mate one saved, and the family left behind that chose these words:
"He died doing his duty. That's all"
Those seven words break my heart every time I read them.
Lest we Forget.
The ABC had a good doco on tonight about General Monash... Worth a look if you get a late run or catch it on ABC2.
There's an interesting one on later on I think it was SBS (maybe ABC after Lateline) on War Memorials and how the different countries view their own efforts on the Western Front. The poms are condesending as always.

The poppies have been going around for the past week or more up here, I went to see the Scottish crown jewels in Edinburgh castle today and managed to see the hordes of decorated Scottish military officers leaving after the Remembrance and the Scottish Military memorial on the grounds of the castle.
Saw that Monash doco, good viewing...What a waste of young life that, and all war is...
