My understanding with League is they don't review the whole phase, they ask for a specific pass or obstruction ruling etc.
If there were several incidents then yes it would take longer.
But lets face it, there are only ever a handful of 7+ phases per match and the average is around three phases per try.

Are you sure they're not allowed to ask if the player was in the field of play while grounding the ball? That one gets asked all the time. Based on the rules you'd imagine that "in goal area" means exactly that, but they've still been asking the question.

P.S. The tahs one was a dead-set try..

I may well be wrong but my understanding is they should only be asked if he hit the post or not.
Prior to that it is the TJ's problem.

That's one example I can think of yeah. Actually Ben Jacobs' situation on Saturday was not unlike that one at all.

They need to find some balance between keeping the game moving (I'd hate to see the game delayed a few minutes every time a try is scored) and making sure they get the right call. I guess it should be noted that this is only an issue because the touch judge *****up. No matter what happens it will never be 100% perfect. They could bring in a rule that says you can TMO the 3 phases before the try. But the first time a try is scored after a knock on 4 phases before the try it will be said that the rule isn't right. My personal opinion is one of two options:

    A) any play (don't inlcude lineouts and scrum feeds not being straight), including stuff outside the touch line, can be reviewed by the TMO if it had a direct/significant impact on the try being scored. So if there was a forward pass and then the receiver ran another 50 metres before passing it off 1 metre in front of the goaline to a receiver that scored the try it could be argued that the forward pass had signifcant impact on the try. But if the forward pass resulted in a couple metres gained and then there were 10 more phases then the pass didn't have much impact on the try. Guess it would have to be the referee that decided if it was a signifcant impact.

    B) each team has 1 review per game. They can use it to review any try and can have any phase leading up to the try reviewed.

    Sorry, away on business...

No, the TMO is only permitted to rule on things in in-goal. No can do with stuff between the two goal lines.

    At this stage....
