its 2 because there was a RUGBYWA article i think that indicated that The force wanted a 5/8th signing for the full two years but could only get Pretorius for 1

Yep. But are you saying that you can't sign a marquee for two years but you can sign for 1,then another 1........then another ........and? Or you can sign them for 2 years and that's how it panned out for Braid?

I reckon by now there wouldn't be a premier grade player in the Rugby world that hasn't had a brief eye at least cast over his (or her...) resume`

Probably, so I guess it is all in how you manage it.

So Spanner just needs to put his contract into recess for a few months...
Or maybe in Rugby journo speak that could be “hiatus”…

My understanding (and I'm not an expert in the field) is that you can sign for 1 year with ARU approval. Then you can sign again for 1 year, but you have to get ARU approval each time. The impression I get would be that if Australia suddenly had a glut of young worldclass #7's, Braids next contract would be rejected.

How many players do we have to lose before the ARU cut us a bit of slack. At this rate we won't be able to field a team

Surely there is a law against restriction of trade!! In any other profession one cannot be restricted in earning a living. He is an Australian citizen and they are preventing him from working in Australia in his profession. I would love to see how this would pan out in a court of law. I am sure the ARU would lose this one.

I thought I covered that in "I guess it is all in how you manage it". Certainly an unusual way to renew a contract, maybe even odd that Kyuden didn't look to replace him after he left, but I have no doubt that all the paperwork would be present and correct.
