Ex smoker speaking, fairly heavy for that. Took several attempts to stop but did after probably 10 years of trying, off and on.

For me, I don't have a major problem with people who smoke, as long as it doesn't bug me.....I'm pretty tolerant considering I'm an ex smoker.

The way I see it is......older smokers have made their choice, whether it's based on starting because of; culture, peer pressure, curiosity or just to look cool.

What I like about the governments drive is it targets the youth.

Now, if you are defending smoking and saying it is perfectly ok for our next generation to suck them up then you are an arse hole....IMHO.

But, if not, then this change should be supported....an old smoker knows their brand and will probably stick with it! The point is, not having a brand is boring.....kids hate boring.

The vast majority of smokers I know want to stop, or often think that they would like to. Breaking the habit or addiction, whatever you want to call it, is f'king hard, I know but why help other people start?
Let's try our best to stop passing on this habit! Support the change or just be another mindless self centred wanker....IMHO....of course.

So realistically from a bottom line it would be in the best interest for the Gov. to outlaw them completely. But that will not happen for a very long time.

Imaging the shit fight it would cause.
The might, power, wealth and influence of the tobacco companies pretty much guarantees it would never happen.

In the olden days, people had cigarette holders. Little silver boxes. People would buy the smokes empty the cardboard package and put the smokes in these neat little boxes.

I reckon they'll come right back.

I agree with EnForcer tho. We have to stop the young fellas and girls getting hooked.

I know where you are coming from TEF, but branding and the packets never enticed anyone to start - did you pick them up because you particularly liked the colour of the packaging? I know I didn't.

More to the point, where do you stop? Smoking is bad for you individually, but so is salt - are you going to support an excise on chips? Taxes are already being talked about for fast food, and they are now treating obesity as a sign of unfit parenting and taking fat kids into state care. And never mind smoking; it is nowhere near as bad as drinking. That doesn't just affect the individual, but also their kids and even complete strangers in immediate and shattering ways. So are you going to throw in behind a campaign to triple the excise on alcohol, remove all branding, ban all sponsorship of sports, ban all advertising in general and turn it into a single generic tap that you just have to take your luck with? By extension too, do you think making that much fuss about the drink would make kids less curious about it and reduce the chance of passing on the habit? I seem to remember they tried banning that altogether at one point because it was seen as such a problem for society, but that it didn't work out so good...

The world if full of arses absolutely certain that they know what is best for everone else. I am not sure at what point they all seemed to be put in charge though.

A bit off topic - and Mungo related - but the NSWRL schoolboys finals have been pulled from their Sat morning replays on C9 after 25 years. They are played on Fridays before Toyota Cup & NRL - which have a Bundy logo on the pitch. AFTER 1 FUGGIN' COMPLAINT. ONE!!

It is a trifle rough on the pallet. Thats why they mix it with coke - that black crap would cover up the taste of anything....
