Mainly because the city is so sprawling Alison. Everytime I go to Brisbane or Sydney I come home thinking there should be far greater use of the river to ease traffic congestion.
Unfortunately we are very car orientated community without a solid corridor structure to our transport networks. Remember for many years we only had three train lines (Freo, Midland, Armadale) and the freeway was only about 10kms north and south.
I do agree that they should have a ferry system though, Guildford to Perth, up to Canning or Shelley even, Melville foreshore and obviously up from Freo. Maybe even along the coast...

Thanks for all your replies and comments guys - you are an awesome and knowledgeable bunch :-)))
One of thelocals actually operates Captain Cook Cruises here in Perth and also has the South Perth Ferry contract and he has been at them (WA Gov) for decades about utilising the river. In fact he was consulted about Betty's Jetty and he told them they had it all wrong and it would be difficult to manouvere ferries the way they have it designed due to tidal changes etc......have they listened to anything he said, of course not.
Brisbane ferries are one of the best things about Brisbane, oh and the Valley![]()

Very good to see the rowing club won't be demolished....Many times having a very sore numb arse,
feet, and every muscle in ones body, doing rowathons a few years ago, and fund raising doing daft things to renovate that building....
